Jeannette: The Childhood of Joan of Arc (2017) by Bruno Dumont - cranefly - 11-10-2021 (seen on Criterion) Jeanette (Joan of Arc), played by 8-year-old Lise Leplat Prudhomme, ponders suffering and death all around her at the hands of the rapacious English and questions the heavens on why this should be allowed, all while tending sheep in pastural settings. She often expresses herself through dance and singing, and those she encounters succumb to the same phenomenon. One could, I suppose, call this a musical. Years pass, and Jeanette (now played by an older Jean Voisin) begins to feel her calling. At last she sets off to meet her destiny. The end. This is a curio piece from Dumont which employs a surprising range of song and dance (venturing into hard rock and rap, as well as robotic dance with the occasional cartwheel) and is mesmerizing to watch -- for a bit. But not for an hour and a half. I did some judicious fast-forwarding. Some amazing swordfights. No, I take that back. No fighting whatsoever. That comes in Dumont's follow-up, 2019's Joan of Arc, where a now 10-year old Lise Leplat Prudhomme reprises her role as Joan, though Joan was 19 at the time she decided to play with fire. Okay, I have not seen this follow-up and will likely not. And I doubt very much that there's a swordfight anywhere within the realm of possibility. I do hear rumors that a few horses dance in formation as a sort of representation of battlefield action. And I suspect there is more singing. But please do not assign me the task of ascertaining this. RE: Jeannette: The Childhood of Joan of Arc (2017) by Bruno Dumont - Greg - 11-10-2021 Has anyone else noticed that CF tends to do batches of movies where the title of the movies start with the same letter? He is currently in a 'J' phase but there was quite the streak of movies starting with the letter 'T' RE: Jeannette: The Childhood of Joan of Arc (2017) by Bruno Dumont - Drunk Monk - 11-10-2021 He's probably working his way alphabetically through The Encyclopedia of Twisted Videos by Mag Joel. I have noticed that he's a horrible tease. Case & point: (11-10-2021, 10:14 AM)cranefly Wrote: Some amazing swordfights. No, I take that back. No fighting whatsoever. |
