They Call Me Jeeg (2017) by Gabriele Mainetti - cranefly - 10-19-2021

[Seen on Kanopy]
The title riffs off They Call Me Trinity (1970), perhaps hoping to replicate its box office.  Jeeg is a superhero based on the comix Steel Jeeg, of which I know nothing.  This is reputedly Italy's first superhero movie.

Claudio Santamaria plays the lonely misanthropic crook Enzo, who, escaping from thugs, takes a dip in the Tiber only to emerge irradiated from a toxic barrel.  Sicker than a dog, he recovers to find himself super-strong.  He's still misanthropic, though, until he meets a woman who, suffering trauma, believes she's living in a make-believe world of princesses and superheroes.  Swayed by her imaginings and conviction that he is meant to do good, he begins to change.

Claudio Santamaria is anything but chiseled.  He's just a thick mess of a man, plainly featured, if not homely.  Still, this movie unfolds very well, and it hits all the high notes for a superhero movie, including a worthy and powerful villain.  I appreciated its down-to-earth sensibilities and real-world scenarios.  The feats of strength are well-done, but don't expect any flashy special effects.

Ilenia Pastorelli does a great job playing the woman living in a fantasy world.  She hasn't been in much else, but IMDB tells me she will star in Dario Argento's upcoming Black Glasses (2022), about a woman who, losing her sight, teams up with a Chinese guide-boy to track down a dangerous killer.

I would argue that Super Cop (né Super Fuzz) was Italy's first superhero movie:
