Devs (Hulu 2020) - King Bob - 06-30-2021

Saw this on one of those "things to stream" lists and gave it a try, thinking it was a mystery or thriller. It was sort of, but also kind of about quantum physics, like somebody finally heard about the Everett-Wheeler hypothesis and thought they had to work that into a show. The plot was full of holes and the acting was weak. The protagonist lived somewhere in San Francisco where no one ever parks in front of your building, so you can pull right up. I saw it throough to the end, which made no sense. The whole thing made no sense.

Not recommended.

However, they used a great song from the Jan Garbarek/Hilliard Ensemble album Officium, which I skipped when it came out because the idea of mixing a jazz saxophonist with Medieval chant seemed ridiculous to me. It was not. I missed some pleasure because of my preconceived notion.

I am a few episodes in. Plot holes aside, I like seeing SF. They make it look pretty. And the company campus...I was sure I'd been there. It all looked really familiar. I looked it up. It was filmed at UCSC, mostly around the McHenry library

I finished this last night. I have to counter KB's thumbs down. I enjoyed this series. I've seen a lot of Sci-Fi with weaker concepts, or executed much more poorly. I enjoyed the look and tone of this story. The performances were decent. I've worked with engineers in high tech for a long time and I think everyone is on the spectrum. The characters seem pretty spot-on to me...

I think they did a very good job with the music - not all of it, mind you, but there were a lot of "experimental" pieces used very effectively, for example, this piece by Inuk artists Barbara Akoak and Pauline Kyak.

I have to say recommended...
