Code of the Freaks (2020) by Salome Chasnoff - cranefly - 05-23-2021 [seen on Kanopy] LCF and I watched this tonight to celebrate her birthday. It's a documentary about how disabled people have been treated in cinema. A lot of territory is covered, with clips going far back, and various disabled people are interviewed to get their feedback. One benefit of this documentary is that it whittles the list of disability-themed movies down to the ones that pass muster with the disabled crowd. Here's the complete muster-passing list: Moving right along, here is the movie they most hated: Million Dollar Baby. In, fact, it alarms them, sending the message that disabled people would rather be dead. By the way, in the book the movie is based on, there was no mercy killing. That may have been Eastwood's idea (or politics). We get to see a whole train of A-class actors taking the stage to accept Oscars for their portrayal of disabled people. None of those roles were uplifting. Mostly they served as foils for able-bodied co-stars to achieve enlightenment. The plight of the disabled person doesn't change, or it gets far worse. Real disabled people find humorous depictions the most endurable. The ones that trumpet some sort of spiritual awakening or silly patriotism in the afflicted is the most odious. I fear I won't be able to enjoy another one of these movies ever again. |
