Young Wallander (2021) - Greg - 03-07-2021 Imagine my surprise to find this wasn't about the tightrope walking family and instead it was Swedish based police procedural based on a series of books. The books however were about an older detective (which was also made into a series starring Kenneth Branagh) but this imagines Wallander just starting out as a detective. Although the setting is Sweden, the show is in English. Although everyone speaks with a Swedish accent. We meet Wallander as a rookie living in the projects surrounded by immigrants and poor families. One night a murder takes place in the courtyard in front of the buildings. It's a white man who is killed and the immigrants are blamed, specifically Wallander's neighbor. He is dragged into the investigation and made detective because of his close association to the suspects. I binged 3 episodes last night. They were all quite engaging. There are billionaires involved. Wallander keeps getting hurt. Police rules are bent.Lots of good cliff hangers at the end of episodes. I will continue to watch. But now I need to find a finish show to close out the week so I can get the Scandinavian TV Trifecta! RE: Young Wallander (2021) - Dr. Ivor Yeti - 03-07-2021 Falk, Arne Dahl, Hamilton (Swedish spy movies) are recommended. The originsl "The Bridge" is tippy-toppy, too Falk has ptsd and is probably just a bit on the spectrum. RE: Young Wallander (2021) - Greg - 03-08-2021 I watched two more episodes of Wallander. I think there are only six. I was just too tired last night to plow through to the end. I had a pretty good idea who the villain was. It's the case of why are we talking about these people unless they are involved in the murder somehow? Young Wallander is still prone to big mistakes as is shown in S1 Ep5, especially with your nascent girlfriend. The show is still very engaging. Although, we've gotten to the stage where we just need to solve the mystery already. RE: Young Wallander (2021) - Dr. Ivor Yeti - 03-08-2021 Cara Gee is in Young Wallander? Who knew! RE: Young Wallander (2021) - Greg - 03-08-2021 I'm going to guess that you did. RE: Young Wallander (2021) - Greg - 03-08-2021 Actually, I'm going to have reject the assertion that the Yeti knows. According to IMDB, the only Gee in Young Wallander (or old Wallander for that matter) is Christopher. RE: Young Wallander (2021) - Drunk Monk - 03-08-2021 Fun fact: Yetis can not tell the difference between male and female azns. Dm has the scars to prove this. RE: Young Wallander (2021) - Dr. Ivor Yeti - 03-08-2021 There’s a difference? RE: Young Wallander (2021) - Greg - 03-08-2021 Oh, dear. Is it time to call HR again? RE: Young Wallander (2021) - Drunk Monk - 03-08-2021 (03-08-2021, 04:45 PM)Dr. Ivor Yeti Wrote: There’s a difference? so triggering... RE: Young Wallander (2021) - Greg - 03-09-2021 That was fun. A good quick six episodes. I'm probably going to hunt down the books and/or watch the older Wallander series. The English version stars Kenneth Branagh. It was a good police procedural and even though the crime was solved, no justice is meted out which flies in the face of American Television where the villain must be punished. It's all very bleak, but good. The justice system is just there to grind down the people working in it. But there is one brief glimmer of hope. I hope they make a second season. RE: Young Wallander (2021) - Drunk Monk - 03-09-2021 We watched a few of the old Wallander series ... I think that was on Amazon Prime Masterpiece, or maybe Brit Box... RE: Young Wallander (2021) - Greg - 03-09-2021 HBO Max say they have it. Amazon Prime might have it. But after watching Young Wallander, Netflix offered up a slew of moody Scandinavian crime dramas. RE: Young Wallander (2021) - Greg - 03-10-2021 I think my favorite line or sequence in the whole series was a small one. Wallander and his partner are visiting the Munch Corporate Offices. Wallander's partner stops at a painting on the wall just inside the door. It's a lake with a mountain in the background and a small bird in the foreground to the left. The signature reads "Wallander" The partner asks if that is his father. Wallander concurs but then explains this scene is all his father paints with just a few variations. And Wallander says he can't figure out why. His partner responds "Maybe he hasn't gotten it right yet" I thought that was really profound. RE: Young Wallander (2021) - Drunk Monk - 07-29-2021 This was a bit of alright. I agree with Greg’s review overall but I suspect he was a tad more into it than me (we watch a lot of euro police procedurals so our bar is set fairly high). We watched it all over the last few nights. It reminded me of Endeavor which does a similar thing but with detective Morse. Endeavor is depicted as more brilliant tho and that’s been going for 7 seasons now. This Wallander is more prone to get the crap beat out of him. The lead actors were physically similar too. Enjoyable. I liked the Munchs and the gf, plus the fellow officers were good. I’d watch another season if it got renewed. |
