The Goes Wrong Show (Amazon Prime 2020) - Greg - 11-27-2020

Oh, the tears of laughter. When tQ and I were in London awhile back, we saw a play called 'The Play that Goes Wrong'. It was funniest thing I have ever seen in the theater. It was hysterical.

Much to my delight, I found that the people who made the play have now made a TV show. Much to my delight, it was equally as funny as the play. Laugh out loud funny.

The premise for the TV show and the play is that an amateur theatrical company is putting on a show. Things go horribly wrong. Laughs ensue. If you've ever been in a play, you can really relate to some of the mishaps. But that's not the whole of the humor.

Episode 1 is The Lodge. It is a haunted house show. Prospective home buyers go to this spooky house to see if they can buy it. Naturally, they have to open the night. Horror ensues. Props break. Doors don't open. Cues are missed. Lines are forgotten.

Episode 2 is a World War 2 drama about a code breaking office near an airfield that might have a spy in their midst. It's called The Pilot. So much wrong and funny about this episode as well. They find all new ways to be inept and hilarious.

I highly recommend this.

Noted.

I'll give it a gander, once I clear out everything else in my queue, which went from 'what should I watch?' to 'damn, I can't keep up' in a week or so.

Top of the queue!

Ah, six episodes of laughter. It got a bit repetitive towards the end. But there were still belly laughs in ever episode.

What makes it funny, is the actor's commitment to keep going no matter how screwed up things get. And they make some bold moves in screwing up the show. In one episode, the sets are off by 90 degrees. In another the sets aren't built to scale. An actor doesn't make it on time so they sub in a completely inappropriate actor. One of the actors, (who I think we also saw in London) constantly mugs to the audience if his line gets an applause.

The episodes span the genres. There is a courtroom drama, a historical piece ala Jane Austen, a southern epic, and the Christmas special. They all have their quirks. They all made me laugh.

This didn’t work for me. Perhaps it’d work better if I’d seen the play. It just sorta fell flat for me.

We have different tastes in humor.

Although the owner of the house Fortinoy reminded me faintly of Yeti’s bro Ross.

Probably too much build up. The play was the same as the TV show. Although, live theater is always better.

Or maybe you are dead inside?

Aren't we all dead inside by now? Isn't that why we're here?

It just felt like the same pratfall over and over again. We're doing a play. Something went wrong. We'll keep doing the play.

Maybe it works better for thespians. Not that I have anything against thespians. I have some thespian friends. Really I do.

The Goes Wrong Show is back for season 3. Unfortunately, they have moved to Broadway HD streaming service. I coughed up the bucks to see it because tQ and I love the show so much. We watched S3ep1 and S3ep7. The Broadway HD player is messy and it was hard to tell where to start.

Ep1 was the Nativity Play. We had the pantless magi. A storybook set that falls over. Rocket propelled Angel Gabriel. All good stuff.

Ep7 was the cast rebelling and doing whatever short things they wanted which included a Masterclass on acting. The big tip was to run screaming at the audience to frighten them which causes the actor to be less scared.

S2Ep2 Summer Once Again. Robert Grove assumes command of a Downtown Abbey style play where the son comes home from the war to find his fiancee missing. it becomes a time loop as Grove wants to make a mistake free episode. Shoes are eaten. Goulash is mistaken for Galoshes. And boy is that stove on fire.

S2Ep3 The Most Lamentable...(the title is about twenty more words. It's Shakespeare. Colin Shakespeare. Cousin of Simon. Royal treachery abounds. There are twins. And best of all sword fights. Complete with a magnetized sword.

Part of what makes it funnier is that you get to know the players and their strengths and weaknesses. Robert Grove is always over acting and trying to steal scenes. Chris Bean is the director and lead constantly battles Grove. One cast member can never remember his lines or stage direction. One woman is always getting hit by props and scenery. Max Bennet loves to ham it up.
