We're back, alive and intact.
Ecuador was ... disturbing.
When we arrived at the small resort on the side of the Tungurahua volcano, we found it deserted, except for a skeletal staff. We suspect it might have had something to do with the fact that the volcano was erupting.
Okay, erupting might be too strong a word. In July 2006, it rumbled and spewed lots of ash, tossed some big rocks, and had some lava flow.. Some houses were buried in ash, and a few people were killed by the gases.
Since that time, it's been spewing ash pretty steadily. The day before our arrival, the resort got a layer of ash, and it was still being cleaned up while we were there. As an example, all the Calla lilies were gray.
We spent a week there, which got mighty boring. Despite claims by the website that the staff speaks English as well as Spanish, they didn't speak a word of it. Lots of confusion, miscommunications, and minimal service, and doing anything at all cost extra, on top of the bundle we were already paying. The volcano was neat, but one day would have sufficed for that.
The two weeks in the Amazon, however, were fantastic. Every day was filled with new adventures.
Anyway, I need to catch up on work for a few days. Then I'll try to provide photos and anecdotes in a reasonable format. Oh, and I need to catch up on Doom. Everyone still sane?

More technology to learn.
I just got a cell phone a month ago after lots of pressure from friends.
Now they make fun of me because I leave it at home when I go out.
I hate it. I absolutely hate it.
And now one friend keeps text-messaging me. My replies pretty much eat up the rest of the day.
