One Wonderful Sunday (1947) - Drunk Monk - 08-27-2020

A Kurosawa film made post-WWII during the occupation. A young broke couple tries to find joy on their day off together. This stars no one I knew. It reminded both of us of those days of our youth when we’d have an adventure with no money, just exploring the world. Not that we have money now but we aren’t as carefree. Actually the couple in the film are far from carefree. Every turn holds the specter of despair. I could relate to the guy a lot - struggling to not fall into darkness in a bleak world. There’s a scene where they imagine the cafe they dream of owning that was a precursor to Dodeskaden  with the homeless father and son imagining their dream mansion. It’s the same device only Kurosawa takes it to a whole other level there (and that one still feels like a punch in the gut that left me gasping even though I have the seen that film in years). And there’s some early shots here that tease Kurosawa’s brilliance to come - particularly a dash through a crowd in hopes to make a concert that must’ve been tricky without dollies and women of that signature face lighting that just glows in B&W.

No sword fights. Recommended for DOOM film buffs.
