Destination Arnold (2016) by Sascha Ettinger-Epstein - cranefly - 07-09-2020 I caught this documentary on Kanopy. With its bizarre subject, I found it hard to resist. Two women, close friends and both Australian aborigine, set for themselves the goal of making it to the Arnolds. What is the Arnolds? An invitation-only bodybuilding championship being held in Australia for the first time. Did they make it? Did even one of them make it? I don't really know. To paraphrase director Sascha's comments made later, sometimes the best-laid plans for a documentary get subverted by something called reality, and you just have to go with the flow. Essentially, these two women are dealing with a whole lot of issues. Family issues, relationship issues. Raising children, past traumas, you name it. And on top of that they're trying to bodybuild? Which requires a special trainer and unrelenting dietary and workout discipline? Talk about climbing aboard an emotional roller coaster, on top of what you're already dealing with. I really don't know if steroids were involved, which would add an extra layer of stress. The documentary doesn't mention it. Anyway, I found the documentary worthwhile just for its glimpse of the plight of two aboriginals trying to better themselves against impossible odds. |
