Little Joe (2019) - Drunk Monk - 06-22-2020

The Widow won Best Actress at Cannes for this. Y'all know how much I luv the Widow. But man, this movie sux. Emily plays a divorced mom with a teen son who is also a botanist genetically engineering a flower to produce oxytocin in humans, a feel good plant. It's basically Invasion of the Body Snatchers but instead of coming from space, the mind controlling plants are frankenplants.

The soundtrack is really annoying, going from a lot of dead air to dentist drill tinnitus shrills when the plants are being malevolent, and then having funky Bunraku-like breaks with clap sticks and off key flute. Camerawork is a lot of slow dull pans going nowhere. The color schemes are odd pastels - almost everything is made to contrast with Emily's bright red shock of locks. The lab coats are lime green and Emily's wardrobe is almost 60s op art. Emily is good, but not Best Actress good. Mostly, it's a boring watch, annoyingly so.

No sword fights. Like what's even the point, amirite? Not DOOM recommended at all, even for fellow Widow lover Ivor.

Dammit.

I know, right? Even though her costumes are pastel colors that contrast with her crimson locks, they dress her like a mom, kinda frumpy, not that flattering. She does do some fine acting, but I thought she was better in Daphne (http://www.brotherhoodofdoom.com/doomForum/showthread.php?tid=4419) and better still in The Calling ( http://www.brotherhoodofdoom.com/doomForum/showthread.php?tid=4273) although she didn't like her own performance in that role. I tried to impress her at dinner by complimented her on that and she blew me off. In retrospect that was probably her first-line hottie defense reflex against fanboys.

Nevertheless, I'm pleased she won at Cannes for this and can't wait to see what she does next.
