Bombshell - Drunk Monk - 01-31-2020

No, not DM's Charlize-Margot-Nicole nacho-filled hot tub fantasy menage a quatre flick.  This was the Hedy Lamarr doc. Truth be told, I don't know if I've ever seen a Hedy movie. She was glamourous. She was a jew that escaped the Nazis. She likely met Mussolini. She was a trophy wife, had like half a dozen husbands, was abused by Hollywood, hooked on IV meth from Dr. Feelgood, fell into scandal, pioneered then overdid plastic surgery, raised huge amounts of money for the war effort.  And she invented frequency hopping, the fundamental privacy encoding used by the military, for cell phones, bluetooth, wifi, and pretty much everything nowadays. I should really see a Hedy film. I should see that Charlize-Margot-Nicole flick too.  No sword fights.  Maybe there will be one in the C-M-N flick. Not particularly DOOM recommended, maybe for the cfs because they like that scientifical stuff.

You really should subscribe to the Criterion channel if you want to watch some Hedy Lamarr movies.

I just did a search of her name on the channel and got, Sorry, No Videos Were Found.

So never mind, and forget I even posted this.

RE: Bombshell - Greg - 02-01-2020

Wasn't she in Blazing Saddles?

RE: Bombshell - Drunk Monk - 02-01-2020

Mel Brooks is a talking head in this. He claims he went to Hollywood with the intention of seducing, even marrying Hedy. Then he says jokingly that at least he hoped to take her to dinner so he could feel her up under the table. Guess he didn’t get the #metoo memo.

This was DM's Charlize-Margot-Nicole nacho-filled hot tub fantasy menage a quatre flick.  Only it's not about that. Nope.  Quite the opposite.

I've often praised Charlize and she's almost unrecognizable as Megyn.  She delivers a pitch perfect performance here and we'd expect no less.  Having her spliced into footage of tRump is almost seemless. I've often praised Nicole and she's on point here too, although she's Nicole, not Gretchen Carlson.  But still, those eyes of hers are a piercing as always and she carries her role off with the dignity it demands.  I've often praised Margot and here, she's a composite character, not based on a real individual. Her emotional breakdown scene sheds light on the suffering that the other two characters mask with their icy professionalism.  Lithgow is loathsome as Ailes - like Charlize, John is almost unrecognizable under heavy makeup, but his voice is so distinctive and a giveaway.  Same goes for Janney - it took me way too long to realize who it was with her makeup and accent, which was just me being inattentive because her makeup wasn't as disguising.  Kate McKinnon has an unusual role, and even delivers a nice bit of acting in one scene.  And Malcolm McDowell as Murdoch is amusing, even though he doesn't appear until the end.  Actually, how all the players are portrayed is amusing, Geraldo, Hannity, Guilfoyle, Guiliani, and so on.

It's an important film but got lost in the shuffle because it's just one of those topics that people don't want to see for entertainment.  But they should see it.

RE: Bombshell - Greg - 03-29-2020

I have the recent Bombshell in my queue. Netflix decided I wanted to see Escape at Dannemora instead of the twelve films above it on my list.

You won't like it.  Mediocre sets.  Not MCU.  It's just three of the most talented actresses from OZ making an important statement film.

I'm still bummed that there were no swordfights.  Maybe in the director's cut?

RE: Bombshell - Greg - 05-11-2020

Seen it. Liked it. Pretty much on point with what DM said.

I kept asking myself if that was really Charlize. Such a great job. But I didn't want any sympathy for Meghan which is why I liked it when she got called out by her staff. I have a better appreciation for Gretchen as before I just thought of her as another Fox Blonde bimbo.

It was a really well done move. But it was awkward looking into the Fox cess pit for two hours.

RE: Bombshell - Drunk Monk - 05-11-2020

you're just saying you liked it because i said you won't like it.

i feel ya on the fox cesspit. did fox ever have any reaction to this film?

RE: Bombshell - Greg - 05-11-2020

I'm thinking I would have to watch Fox to know that. And watching Fox isn't going to happen.

RE: Bombshell - Drunk Monk - 05-11-2020

i feel ya again

RE: Bombshell - cranefly - 05-11-2020

I'm ever more torn about this one.  You guys aren't making it any easier.  So many great actresses and performances, but...  So far I can't convince myself to go there.

A similar resistance to Vice (Cheney).

And then there's Tiger King, which everyone and their grandmother is praising to high heaven.  But I don't want to immerse myself in someone so Horror Clownish -- or so it sounds...

Has anyone ventured into that bit of burning brightness?

RE: Bombshell - Greg - 05-11-2020

I saw Vice. I had to shower over the sleaziness. I'm skipping Tiger King because it sounds like watching a car wreck.

RE: Bombshell - Drunk Monk - 05-11-2020

Stacy saw Vice. I bailed on it. Not into Tiger King (no netflix anymore)

RE: Bombshell - Dr. Ivor Yeti - 05-11-2020

I’m skipping anything that looks like a trainwreck. Don’t have the emotional bandwidth. Keeping it strictly escapist, as I have for the last few years.
