Daughter of the Wolf - Drunk Monk - 12-03-2019

The Mandalorian S1E4 just wasn't enough.  I needed more Gina.  Just a little bump to get me through until she reappears in the show (I know when because I peaked just now, by accident).  So there was this.  Gina in the lead role.

Guess who plays the villain?  Richard Dreyfuss.  Been wondering where he's been, eh?  Well, he's been making movies like this.

Gina is an ex-soldier. Her son is kidnapped.  She hunts down the kidnappers.  This is all established in the first scene and the rest is the hunt.  That's it really.  Dreyfuss plays some sort of whack job cult leader, I guess.  That's not quite clear but the other kidnappers call him 'Father' and maybe that's sort of explained but he's really a nutjob trying to get revenge on Gina's dead father.  Something like that.  It's all set in a snowbound wilderness with plenty of spectacular drone shots.  It goes through the motions, offering the occasional action scenes - car chase, snowmobile chase, gun fight, knife fight, fist fight, axe and brand fight, all lackluster.  There's several 'nope, that would kill you' moments that Gina survives, but hey, it's Gina.

And then there's the wolves.  They attack the villains but spare Gina.  She has some sort of special wolf connection.  I suppose that's implied by the title but it's never really explained.  It's Gina tho and if anyone has a special connection to wolves, she could.

Why can't filmmakers find a decent role for Gina?  She acts a little in this, well enough, but the action scenes waste her abilities.  She gets injured early on so she bears facial scratches and one is her real life birthmark, a reddish patch over her eye.  Maybe that saved on makeup?  She looks great overall, and carries the role well enough, a bit stilted with a few of the lines, but forgivably so.

I think that's enough Gina for me for now.  I know I'll regret this later.  I already feel a Gina hangover coming on...
