Raise Hell: The Life & Times Of Molly Ivins - Drunk Monk - 10-09-2019

Oh Molly, we need you now more than ever.

To be honest, I wasn't that aware of Ivans beyond Bushwhacked (never read it but remember it coming out). I don't remember reading her columns, but man, I should've.  And if she was still alive, her insight on today's political insanity would be extraordinary.

This is a bit of a standard doc.  They seem to talk to the right people, like Dan Rather and Rachel Maddow, with plenty of footage of interviews - mostly from UCs and SF unsurprisingly.  The notion of a maverick alcoholic brilliant liberal Texan is so out of the box, and her career as a columnist was definitely groundbreaking.  The voice she found, that wicked satirical cowgirl lilt, is something any writer envies.  I do enjoy tales of writer's journeys as long as they are by others - when self-autobiographical, they get too self absorbed.

Kind of like so many of the musician docs we've been watching lately where I just wanted to hear their music, I felt I'd rather just hear her speeches than to doc itself in the end. But still, what an inspiration she was.
