The Farewell - Drunk Monk - 08-02-2019 Awkwafina is an awkward stage name but she charmed me in Crazy Rich Asians. Here she truly impressed me with her acting chops and I won’t mock her name anymore. It’s a comic tragedy or a tragic comedy set it modern day PRC and Awkwafina is the only recognizable actor. Writer director Lulu Wang has a keen eye for surreal China, it’s harsh exhausting power and addiction to ritual - I could almost smell China again and it’s been a decade and a half since I’ve been there. A solid and sublime film that’s had me laughing and crying at unexpected moments, as well as sorting my inherited cultural baggage. Not really DOOM recommended unless you’ve been to China or want a peek into what it can Ben like. RE: The Farewell - Greg - 08-03-2019 The only Ben I want to see is Bulben. I keep thinking Awkwafina is a rip off of the bottled water. RE: The Farewell - Drunk Monk - 08-03-2019 Be Stoopik spellcheck Yeah, the water thing bugged me but no more. She’s a serious talent. RE: The Farewell - Drunk Monk - 03-27-2020 Watched this again because Stacy had not seen it. It still works for me and Stacy enjoyed it too. It's very poignant. RE: The Farewell - King Bob - 04-19-2020 I enjoyed this, but didn't think it was great. Maybe because the NY Times review was so gushing that I expected a masterpiece and didn't think it was one. Awkwafina's extremely bad posture made me uncomfortable. Cinematography was very good. |
