Cruz Beach Boardwalk concerts 2019 - Drunk Monk - 04-09-2019 Quote:2019 Concert Schedule meh. English Beat maybe, but just cuz we were just talking about them. http://www.brotherhoodofdoom.com/doomForum/showthread.php?tid=4906&pid=32471#pid32471 RE: Cruz Beach Boardwalk concerts 2019 - Greg - 04-09-2019 Well at least they give you their one hit song so you know the band. RE: Cruz Beach Boardwalk concerts 2019 - Drunk Monk - 04-09-2019 whadaya want 4 free? RE: Cruz Beach Boardwalk concerts 2019 - Greg - 04-09-2019 I want to know if Natalie Merchant is still performing with 10000 Maniacs. RE: Cruz Beach Boardwalk concerts 2019 - Drunk Monk - 04-09-2019 naaaaaaaaaaah if you know her name, it's because she had a solo career and she's not in the band anymore. with most of these bands, you're lucky to have half of the original members. but it's free. FREE! and on the beach. sometimes i can hear them from my veranda. RE: Cruz Beach Boardwalk concerts 2019 - thatguy - 04-10-2019 It seems like it's either the Boardwalk, or the county fair circuit, or both....I'm surprised EB is on there. They seem to be rebounding from that and playing actual venues regularly. 10,000 Maniacs did the album Love Among the Ruins after Natalie left. There was a cover of Roxy Music's More Than This on it. I never heard from them again... --tg PS: I liked Norah Jones' version better... She's high on that 'wanna see' list but every time she comes through town, I've had schedule conflicts. RE: Cruz Beach Boardwalk concerts 2019 - Drunk Monk - 06-14-2019 English Beat in 10..... I’m fos RE: Cruz Beach Boardwalk concerts 2019 - Drunk Monk - 06-15-2019 That was fookin great! Best beach concert so far. A gorgeous day, not too crowded, and a fine season opener. EB is just the lead guitar/vocalist now and he’s a bit lounge act cheesey, but charming and still in okay voice with decent chops. He’s got a half JA sideman to honor the spirit of two tone, drummer, bass, two Asian keyboardists who could be brothers, a back up singer and a decent sax. The band is still tight, navigating those speedy hairpin turns and brakes of ska - perfect for the beach. So irie. So bless. Almost went back for set 2 but I indulged in a veggie corn dog at the beach and regretted that late into last night. WTH don’t I have any English Beat in my collection? RE: Cruz Beach Boardwalk concerts 2019 - Greg - 06-26-2019 Everclear this Friday would get me out to the boardwalk. They have a couple of songs I liked. But they burned out fast. But they burned out fast. If Tara is up for it, I'll go. But pretty much every Boardwalk band had a hit or two and then burned out. It's more about hanging out at the Boardwalk, enjoying some free music. RE: Cruz Beach Boardwalk concerts 2019 - Drunk Monk - 07-12-2019 Feckin Foghat F O S RE: Cruz Beach Boardwalk concerts 2019 - Drunk Monk - 07-13-2019 Being able to get home on Friday, grab a bite, get pretty inebriated, and walk down to the front-of-stage in a few minutes is such a joy. It's like blaring my stereo at 11, except it's a concert on the beach and I can get right up in the speaker - my happy place. Foghat sounds pretty much like expected. Still a four piece, only the drummer is an original member, and I couldn't see him from f-o-s because the stage is too high. I only saw him when he came out to toss drumsticks. The guitarists tossed picks after every song. The lead guitarist had decent well-rehearsed slide licks (he's had like 40 years). The rhythm guitarist and vocals reminded me of what Scapino might be like if he was a rocker - flamboyantly dressed but lost most of his vocal range and apart from one jam, seemed inconsequential to the sound. The bass player reminded me a bit of a young Phil Lesh but only physically because he was lanky. He only really played the top two of his four strings but wasn't too bad percussively speaking. I faintly recognized all of there songs, and their big hits like 'slow ride' 'stone blue' 'i just wanna make love to you' and 'fool for the city' brought back memories, even though I wasn't really that into Foghat back in the day. Cheesey and overdone, but that's how these shows go. The audience was our age (old). I was surrounded by dancing 'rocker' chicks, all in their 50s & 60s, with knee braces and joint operation scars - but they were still rockin goddammit. Still rockin! There were a couple of old guys with backpacks of Foghat vinyl because the band was signing and doing a meet & greet after set 2, but I only went for set 1 (I imagine both sets were the same because they played most of their big hits). Not too crowded. Beautiful day on the beach. RE: Cruz Beach Boardwalk concerts 2019 - Drunk Monk - 07-26-2019 Brian Howe. More UK 70s rock. I read Bad Company, but it's really just Brian Howe. Another former rocker doing a lounge act. That being said, he seemed quite aware of his cheesiness and played that with bawdy jokes and funny excuses for when he burped into the mike just before a key note 'too much bbq'. He even made direct eye contact with me (there weren't a lot of us in the sand pit) and stuck his tongue out, which made me laugh. He invited a woman up from stage to sing with him. The first woman was fat in a U.S. flag shirt and tried to hope the barricade - total fail - fell flat on her ass. That was funny. She laughed too even though we were all laughing at her because it was such a fall on your ass move. They woman who made it claimed it was her 60th birthday and only knew the chorus, and sang it flat and not in time with the band. That was funny too. Brian hammed it up. He actually got me to laugh several times. Classic 4 piece back-up, another bass player who only played the top two strings (WTH? Did they only have 2-string basses in the 70s? KB, what's the sitch?). Brian only introduced the lead guitar who pulled off a few classic solos. Rhythm guitar and drums just kept time. If you took all of the worst aging attributes of all of DOOM, rolled them up in a ball, and distributed them across a band, it would look like this show. Now at our bungalow and can hear set 2 pretty clearly. Kinda bummed I missed 'rock & roll fantasy' but I got a little reggae jam in 'feel like making love' which they actually jammed out quite a bit until the big cheesey lounge act ending. RE: Cruz Beach Boardwalk concerts 2019 - Drunk Monk - 07-27-2019 One more thing - Brian said his shirt sales go to support animal programs and that he has seven shelter dogs. So that was cool for a rock lounge act. |
