Rashomon - Greg - 01-09-2019 For your Wednesday afternoon enjoyment, a complete non-sequitur. Turns out that Heziburo Okawa shot footage of the stage version of Roshomon. It stars Rod Steiger and Akim Tamiroff dressed up as Japanese men. Okawa even filmed the rehearsals. Most of it is blurry and out of focus, but it some of it is very nicely done. This was part of the collection I dug out of Okawa's trash many years ago. RE: Roshomon - Drunk Monk - 01-09-2019 woah. is that on vhs? RE: Roshomon - Greg - 01-09-2019 It's a quicktime file on my computer RE: Roshomon - Greg - 01-09-2019 To clarify even more, it was shot on 8mm film and the WCFA digitized. It is silent. My guess is that either Tarao Mori or Okawa had something to do with the fight choreography. RE: Roshomon - Drunk Monk - 01-09-2019 Trippy find. Can you share a screen shot? I’d save that, frame it was some promo narration, and drop it when there’s Rashomon buzz to coattail on it. RE: Roshomon - Greg - 01-09-2019 I am a man of miracles and wonder RE: Roshomon - Dr. Ivor Yeti - 01-10-2019 Do you just type, G-Man, or do you link to the footage? Well? I’m waiting! RE: Roshomon - Greg - 01-10-2019 I just type. RE: Roshomon - Greg - 01-10-2019 And I dance. I'm a miracle! ![]()
RE: Rashomon - Greg - 01-10-2019 Here is the footage that I find usable. It's about 6 minutes. I added the music. RE: Rashomon - Drunk Monk - 01-10-2019 Ahhh, slant eye. My old friend. I suggest you add a date on that, even a circa would do, because slant eye is a hot button topic in my community. Nice swordfight. The finale sword fight in Kurosawa's film stands as one of my favorite cinematic sword fights of all time. RE: Rashomon - Greg - 01-10-2019 Well according to Wikipedia, Bloom and Steiger did the play on Broadway in 1959. I'm wondering or thinking this might be the out of town preview they did in Philadelphia, so it is probably around the same time. And I wonder if Steiger consciously mimicked Mifune. He was a cameraman and auditioned for a role because his friends put him up to it. At the cattle call, everyone was given an emotion on a card to act out, and Mifune flipped out. Turned out his was anger. He didn't get the part, but the director was so amused that he recommended him for a different role. |
