Night Tide stars a very young Dennis Hopper as a sailor on shore leave who meets and falls madly in love with a young woman who may or may not be a mermaid.

It's got some quirky bits, but overall is a bit too slow and standard for my tastes.  Still, it shows unusual intelligence in the storytelling and details.  For instance, Dennis gets a tarot reading at one point, and though it isn't a long scene, still, the whole belief system and meanings of the cards and their positions are presented quite well.

By most accounts, Curtis Harrington was shamefully underrated as a  writer and director.  But there's probably better introductions than this to his ouvre.
He was a part of the avant-garde crowd back in the day and was involved with filmmaker Maya Dayan -- about whom I'll have more to say later and elsewhere.
