Why do 1 body switch, when you can do 4? Snore
Okay, I don't know why I thought this film would rise above what I expected, but it didn't.
Who would have guessed, besides everyone over 10, that the teenagers would all transform into their polar opposites when they went into the game? The hot girl becomes the fat old man. The wimp becomes a giant. The football player becomes a shrimp. And the brainy girl becomes the hot girl.
It stars Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, and Jack Black. Don't ask me the girl's name because it didn't mean anything to me. Dwayne plays Dwayne. Kevin Hart is annoying. Black sort of pulls off his annoying hot girl inner self. And their is a Jonas brother floating around in there too. Hot tip: He can't act.
A lot of time is spent explaining how adventure games work and about quests. Bobby Cannavale as the bad guy is wasted since most of the time for him is spent glaring and yelling 'Get them' to his henchman.
There is CGI and explosions and fighting and traps and motorcycles armed with rocket launchers. It seems like there might a good film in there waiting to get out. But the story really kills it. And did I mention Kevin Hart is annoying.
At the end when they go back, they all have learned a valuable lesson.
My valuable lesson is not to watch the sequel.

Or go back and watch the original. It was at least reasonably entertaining as I recall. Not too much manic Robin Williams.

Tara watched this on the flight over. She also watched Baywatch. It was some weird Rock binge. She laughed at both and said they were funny mindless flight fodder. I was tempted to watch them with her, but I didn't. Maybe you should watch Baywatch, Greg. I'm sure it'll give you more to critique.

Well, this version was much closer to the original book.
Okay, that's BS. I've never read the book. This was horrible, so horrible I had to watch it all the way through to indulge it's horridness. I checked in with it because Danny DeVito just signed in on the next installment, and I'm luv him as Frank in Always Sunny. I did like Nebula though. I'm not a DW person (I know, I know, that's a serious discredit to my nerd standing) and she's so made-up as Nebula that it's hard to get a sense of her but I was amused by her dance-fighting skills. Black was okay, like Greg said. Hart, the Rock, Jonas, were all exactly what you'd expect.

No. Not my 'must-see'. But I'd watch it on a flight. Mostly for Karen Gillan. PPFY called that one right.

Oh right, Karen Gillan. And Danny Devito. And extra points for Awkwafina. Black, Hart, & Rock do what they always do. Jonas too. Karen is the only one even trying, but mostly she's showing off her legs and abs. Devito and Danny Glover are only in the begining and end, but then they transform so it's the others pretending to be them, which doesn't work at all. What's more, there's some avatar switching to show off their acting range. Yeah right. Awkwafia is okay but the guys barely dial it in. It's all about Gillan, who delivers another dance-fight, this time with nunchucks. Hardly worth the 2 hours though.
There's kinda a sword fight, more of a machete and it's only swung about a little bit. Nunchucks tho - that's always worth a point. Not DOOM recommended unless you're really into Gilllan with nunchucks. Or if you're Greg. But he won't see it. He hates everything.
