Namiya - Drunk Monk - 08-10-2018

Where do we post airplane movies again?  Here?

This is a Jackie Chan film from last year where he doesn't do any Kung Fu.  He doesn't even have a fight scene.  And it's not a comedy.  It's a time travel karma tale about a mailbox that connects letters from 25 years ago, and Jackie plays his old wise dude characters ala the antique shop owner in Forbidden Kingdom/Ninjago who gives advice to people via letters, sort of a Dear Abby but it's Dear Jackie.  It's convoluted as there are like half a dozen story arcs all tangled up with time.  I'm sure there were time paradoxes but it was fairly tightly written and I enjoyed it for that.  Lately, JC flicks are highly autobiographical - The Foreigner & Bleeding Steel had daughter issues and Jackie has those. This film was more about him coming to terms with advice he's given out and being a role model and whether it was really good in the end or not.  A heartwarming film, much better than I expected because I thought Jackie was only a cameo but is actually the lead.  Not really recommended however, unless you're a super stalwart JC fanboy like me.
