The Weird Man (1983) - Drunk Monk - 05-04-2017 My latest kick is obscure Shaw Brothers flicks with dumb titles. This is supposedly a chapter from Romance of the Three Kingdoms as Cao Cao is referenced, but I don't remember it (RotTK is long and convoluted and although I've engaged it several times, I could easily have missed this episode). A Taoist shaman is unjustly killed - he reincarnate as an impish acrobat that's indicated by always being shown in a red spotlight (80s special effects) and possesses a lot of people. He possess a gal to seduce a guy. He swaps back and forth possessing two opponents in a duel. The effects are like the level of Bewitched - wires and film cuts. But it's directed by Chang Cheh, which means gaudy costumes (yello kilts!), wacky weapons (rope dart triangular frisbee!), and great Kung Fu. FLAMING sword fights! Some really amazing choreography - absurd and acrobatic. Not for everyone for it's odd plot and cheesiness, but fun for any Shaw fan. My fav was the henchman who gets his whole arm lopped off yet fights on for several more scenes. I should just dedicate myself to watching all the Chang Cheh films. His work is so fun - great wuxia ultravi. RE: The Weird Man (1983) - Dr. Ivor Yeti - 05-06-2017 Are you riding with El Rey whilst you enjoy these obscure Shaw Bros movies? I've noticed that they are pulling out a lot of stuff that they have never shown before. I get around... - Drunk Monk - 05-06-2017 Amazon Prime. That have a unique cache of Shaw treasures. I spoke to the guy in charge of the El Rey collection, encouraging him to move into more of the obscure titles, but he said that only the main ones were fully restored, so they sprinkle them in conservatively. Most of El Rey's broadcasts I know pretty well already. Besides, AP allows me to do airplay on my old appletv. Gotta upgrade to do that with Sling El Rey. Soon, before my show premieres... RE: The Weird Man (1983) - Dr. Ivor Yeti - 05-06-2017 The Weird Man just showed up on El Rey last week, which is why I asked. They are playing quite a few that I have never seen before. Did it? - Drunk Monk - 05-06-2017 Weird...man. Did you watch it? What did you think? RE: The Weird Man (1983) - Dr. Ivor Yeti - 05-06-2017 No, i didn't -- there were so many new ones. I remembered the name, though, as it was...weird, man. |
