I'd heard director Villaneuve was worth a look and I can see why now. His sweeping panoramic shot and minimal soundtrack usage were engaging. Blunt was annoying as the naive idealist, but abdominal and del Toro were great counterpoints. Mexico looks rough. Halfway through I turned to Stacy and said 'wait, we sent our daughter there last summer?' Some nice gunplay and tension, but predictable once the story got rolling. It's good to remind the Trumpeters that there already is a wall.

What a big bucket of dumb.
The music and the visuals gave it a great moody vibe. I kept thinking that there wasn't a sound track and then those discordant lower chords swept I would remember.
But as I sat there and pondered the story, I kept coming back to one thought: dumb. Why would you pick an FBI agent to help you that was so alien to your cause. There are tons of FBI agents, find one that is more tractable. But no. Let's keep annoying Emily Blunt along because she was so good in Edge of Tomorrow.
And Blunt had to be the stupidest of seasoned agents. The whole set-up just rang false.
Take this, you are surrounded by thousands of miles of desert, yet you go to the trouble of putting your victims in the walls of the safe house and then drywalling over them. Just go bury them in the desert.
Dumb. It had a great patina of cool, but underneath was a base layer of stupid.

I think spell check changed Brolin to abdominal. I was hoping Blunt would get shot, like for real, in the story I mean, and be sealed up in some drywall somewhere.
Have you seen anything else by Villanueve? I liked his style even though the story was predictable.

Day of the soldado
I’m not sure why I saw this. I had to kill some time in the east bay while waiting to pick Tara up from SJC and it was this, or Ant-Man, Jurassic, Ocean’s 8, Incredibles... I wasn’t that keen on the first one, but after all that Dead & Co hippielove crap I craved a good dose of ultravi. I do like Brolin & Del Toro a lot and Blunt isn’t in this one.
But no. This is more of the same. It’s about terrorists and the wall but ambiguous politically. There’s some good moments of ultravi, a plethora of shots of military vehicles in the desert, lotsa copters, cold-blooded henchmen killing, and full auto. Brolin & Del Toro are good but needed just a little more. I did like the ominous soundtrack. The ending was kinda good but not worth sitting through the rest of it.
Shoulda gone with Oceans 8.

What bugs me the most about Sicario is that I really want it to be good. Benicio is great in the role and the concept is good. It just needs to follow through with a decent script. It's like the scriptwriter has these plot points he wants to hit, but doesn't bother with getting from one to the next, so it doesn't hold together. Maybe the threequel? But I won't watch that. Not if I have to pay for it. Nope. No bueno.

The Sicario brand has become a full-fledged franchise with the debut of Stefano Sollima's Sicario: Day of the Soldado and the overall reaction to the intense sequelseems relatively positive. Sollima had the unenviable task of following in the footsteps of Denis Villeneuve, but he has pulled it off by delivering a satisfying sequel that feels fresh and new. With all of that said, Sollima apparently isn't interested in coming back for a third [url=x-apple-data-detectors://4]Sicario movie, as he feels that these movies need different directors to bring different styles to each installment. In a recent interview, the director explained:

I'd love to watch another chapter of 'Sicario,' but it should be from a different director who has their own specific style. You shouldn't have more than one film from the same director. Then it would be too much like a real franchise.
The Sicario world is not a series like Captain America or The Dark Knight series, in which filmmakers like The Russo brothers or Christopher Nolan put their own signature spins on the characters. As Stefano Sollima explained in his recent interview with Variety, the series should feel different from movie to movie as new filmmakers come in to direct off of the scripts written by Taylor Sheridan -- who is continuing a hot streak off of other films like Hell or High Water and Wind River.
This is something that other members of the Sicariouniverse have already championed in the development of Sicario: Day of the Soldado. Specifically, Josh Brolin opened up to CinemaBlend in an interview ahead of the film's release and noted that he wanted Day of the Soldado to feel like a different beast when compared to the movie that preceded it. Bringing Stefano Sollima into the equation played a major role in achieving that goal, and it sounds like Sollima himself wants that to continue by handing off the series to another filmmaker in its next installment.
Besides, it's also worth noting that Stefano Sollima has other work that he needs to focus on at the moment. In addition to his recent work on Sicario: Day of the Soldado, the director is also in the process of developing a film adaptation of the Call of Duty video game series. Working on Day of the Soldado almost certainly helped prepare the Italian filmmaker for that kind of endeavor, but now he wants to see what someone else can do with the franchise that he helped to continue.
