Gravity 3D…no wait…The Butler - thatguy - 10-14-2013 So the GF and I were downtown, the nexus of theaters in Santa Cruz. On spur of the moment, over dinner, I convinced her that we should go see Gravity (which is a feat as she has no interest in Sandra Bullock movies). The next movie started in 10-15 min so we finished moseyed over to the theater and waited in line. When we got up to the ticket counter, we found that this was a 3D showing and they only had seats available in the front 2 rows. We decided to punt and went on down to the Del Mar - our restored Art Deco theater (now owned by the Nickelodeon - our art house theater). The only thing about to start was The Butler. We didn't know much about it, but we were out and determined to use the time to watch a g*dd*mn movie in a g*dd*mn theater, so we bought tickets. Awesome snacks at the counter supplied by The Buttery. Bought a shortbread cookie that was coated in pecans with a dollop of ganache on the top. Amazing… …much better than the movie. Really. The movie was vapid. It reminded me of Forrest Gump. It was a tour of the civil rights movement and American history through the eyes of a White House butler, played by Forrest Whittaker, that served for multiple administrations, from Eisenhower to Reagan, with as much depth as the grooves on a bald tire. It touched on all of the major events. Conveniently for the story, his son was an activist and was there at the Lunch Counter, and there at motel when MLK was shot, and then became a Black Panther. Oprah was there as the wife. I think she was playing the same character from The Color Purple. Most of the cameos take you right out of the movie. Really bad choices, not for the actors' abilities, but for their recognizability as individuals: Robin Williams as Eisenhower. John Cusak as Nixon. Severus Snape as Regan and Jane Fonda as Nancy. I really wanted to see a sword fight, some CG blood, some explosions. It really needed something to spice it up. We held out for the entire movie, but when I left, my ass was really sore. --tg PS: I wish they served alcohol at movie theaters our here… I live too close to the Buttery - Drunk Monk - 10-16-2013 The Buttery....mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm S & T went to see the Butler. S likes historical stuff. T went grudgingly, just because it was a movie. There's a rape/murder in the very beginning, so S pulled T out. T wasn't into it anyway. The theater (the Nick at the time) was nice enough to give refunds. And I got some more grist for the mill for when S complains that I expose T to too many violent films (I really don't - I cherry-pick the martial arts flicks with T in mind). |
