Crow's Nest Beach Party - Drunk Monk - 07-25-2013

More free concerts on the beach, just a short walk over the bridge from the bungalow.

Tonight was Thrive on the beach. They were ok - a 5-piece with sax, competent CA reggae, with lots of shout outs to the Cruz. Great fun for free.

The Crow's Nest calamari appetizer is over-rated. Seabright Brewery does a much tastier calamari appetizer for cheaper. However, there is something to be said for Murphy's on tap, and the view...

Midnight Sun 8/8/13 - Drunk Monk - 08-10-2013

At least I think it was Midnight Sun. That's what was advertised. A friend of mine played bass in that band for a short stint. We walked out and listened for about 15 mins, and then went back home. They did some Marley tunes, and then went into Aiko, but we had an appointment to keep.

The summer line-ups are coming out in the Cruz - Drunk Monk - 04-22-2014

This year, Crow's Nest is doing free Reggae Jam Beach Parties every Tuesday night at 8, starting next month and going for at least two months.

So much reggae coming through the Cruz this year. And with the price of gas, it's cheaper for me to just buy tickets (when it's not free) than to go work it. Extra bonus is I don't have to clean barf buckets.

well, that was deceptive - Drunk Monk - 05-07-2014

It wasn't a beach party. It was a party in the upstairs bar. The place was pretty busy, and the upstairs bar offers a splendid ocean view, but it was dark, Crow's Nest is touristy and the bar is like an old '80s fern bar. The live band was doing CA reggae, and when they went into a cover of some old 80s tune (which I tried to remember for this post) I had to leave. I didn't even buy a drink.

Maybe it'll be better later if they move it out to the beach for sunset again.

Ribsy's Nickel 4/3/14 - Drunk Monk - 07-05-2014

The Crow's Nest was packed, more packed than I have ever seen it.

S came down for the walk, but then saw the crowd and heard the band and decided it wasn't her scene. I ran into some friends there, so I hung out for a few beers and enjoyed the sunset. S was right though - the band was weak - CA reggae and punk-lite. They are a local fav, but failed to impress.

reggae tuesdays - Drunk Monk - 07-09-2014

Man, why do I get sucked into these? The Crow's Nest is expensive - priced for tourists as it has such a splendid view of the harbor lighthouse. But it's a short stroll from my bungalow. I stopped by last night, just to get out. There was one dude playing at the bar, acoustic guitar, some pop songs and a few reggae ones. It was mediocre. I didn't even catch the performer's name. I got a Murphy's and calamari appetizers and it was like $17. Their 'award winning' calamari is fresh, but a little overrated. Murphy's on tap is always a treat. But I can't really afford to go back. Sure, the reggae is free, but it's in the bar, so you're obligated to buy a drink at least.

Re: Crow's Nest Beach Party - thatguy - 07-09-2014

Fish tacos from Cafe El Palomar, 2 doors down…You can grab them to go from their little side counter by the bar.

Still pricey, but not as high at Crow's Nest IIRC.

good tip, tg - Drunk Monk - 07-09-2014

S & I have been meaning to try Cafe El Palomar. Fish tacos, eh? Sounds delish.

Re: Crow's Nest Beach Party - thatguy - 07-09-2014

Palomar is tolerable. In my experience, it won't get you sick, but it's nothing to write home about. I do like there sopes though.

...not a scintillating review there, brudda - Drunk Monk - 07-10-2014

Lemme ask ya this - who has the best fish tacos in the Cruz? I've had some decent ones, but I've yet to find the ultimate one. Too many tilipia tacos actually. Looking for those choice salmon tacos. Any suggestions?

Come 45 miles north and I can hook you up. The place serves until after midnight, too.

Beach Party! - Drunk Monk - 06-30-2016

After another stressful dose of traffic jam, I scurried to the beach party for Soulwise, a Cruz reggae band. Twas irie fun and ran into 2 friends there, one who I hadn't seen in years. Lovely sunset. Beer for dinner.

Vacation officially begun.

Bookends - Drunk Monk - 07-08-2016

Anima Cruz last night. Stacy & I garbed dinner at the palomar there and caught a few tunes. Seemed to be the thing to do to bookend my Tassajara trip. AC is typical Cruz reggae. We didn't stay long. The sunset on the lighthouse was lovely.

8/8/19

Soulwise.

Again

With SNWMF & RotR canceled, I’m feeling reggae deficient this summer. It was okay. Nice at the start because only a few were there but super crowded by 2nd set so I didn’t see it through. I was recognized by an older woman dancing next to me - she knew me from RotR and looked vaguely familiar. Tripped me out. LB texted me mourning the closure of hafmc and we bantered a bit about reggae. He says he’ll be thru in early nov.

I didn’t see it through and went for a Betty’s slammin salmon.

Got home. Dug into Wu Assassins. Then an old RM friend called to tell me that another old friend who I knew but hadn’t seen in years, shot himself to death last night after his newlywed wife left him. Damn.

The CNBP is back…

But now with a $5 cover. Not sure it’s worth it…
