Life of Pi 3D - thatguy - 02-07-2013 I don't think the 3d did anything for this film. It didn't detract, but it didn't add either. I had read the book a while ago and forgotten most of the story, but the movie seemed to follow what I remember. Lots of long, slow, gorgeous scenes, but engaging, like Hanks in Castaway. The CGI on the tiger (Richard Parker) is astounding. Gerard Depardieu turns in a truly evil performance at the end, without even being present on film. I'm sure that's why he's on the credits, because apart from that, his actual on screen time is about 5-10 min. It was entertaining - at times like watching the jelly fish exhibit at the aquarium. Some of the "message" gets a little heavy handed, but I enjoyed it in spite of that. Jellyfish - Drunk Monk - 02-25-2013 I'm surprised to read that the 3D didn't do much for this for you, tg. I streamed it and really regretted not seeing it in 3D as it looked like something that could really work well in 3D. But I love 3D, as you know. I was amused to see the tightening of the letterbox frame and then having the fish jump out of frame in the flying fish scene. That's a classic 3D trick. All in all, I enjoyed this. It was a beautiful film and Ang Lee is still a master of the craft. I feel ya on the philosophical heavy handedness - came off very Who shot Liberty Valence? to me at the end. It didn't blow me away, but I wasn't bored and I love a good hallucination sequence SPOILER actually it's all hallucination END SPOILER. I kind of lost track of it all with the meerkat orgy, but beyond that, I was amused. The special effects were really solid. A decent Bollywood dance number but no sword fights. A Hindu Catholic feels guilty in front of hundreds of Gods" As you probably realize, it was a very lyrical and poetic film. Yes, it's the story of a boy on a boat with a tiger. Thankfully, that wasn't all it was about. At it's core it is a treatise on Religion and man's relationship with God. It is quite well done. The bits on the raft get a little lengthy with lots of side journeys into stunning visuals which don't really come across on the small screen, even if your small screen is quite large. I don't think the immersive quality that big screen 3-D doesn't quite come across. But I could kind of see it. Like I could see the definite 3-D moments. Why yes, they do have a big stick pointing at the screen. It was a good film that I should have seen in the theater for the visuals.
