Tekken - Drunk Monk - 10-07-2010 There was a moment when I felt a surge of delight to know that someone was still making films like this. But that moment didn't last long. It's another flick based on a videogame, so the characters are caricature and shallow. I don't know videogames. When I was a kid, my best friend was such ass kicker on any videogame, that it was just no fun playing them (looking at you, ED). I'm told if you played Tekken, the film is better. Cung Le, an MMA champ who I know professionally, is Martial Law. Again, he is defeated in an unbelievable fight. Jin, who looks like the bastard son of Bruce Lee and Ralph Macchio, is about as thick around the shoulders as Cung is around his thighs. There's just no way that fight would have went that way. What's worse, is that fight was early on in the film, and then I was stuck watching the rest of it. There's a hottie fight in strange bondage bikinis (Did anyone tell the actress playing Christie that half her ass would be hanging out of her costume for the whole film? Actually, that was mildly entertaining...) Speaking of Karate Kid, it was good to see Tamlyn Tomita again. All the fights are won through flashbacks - it's very Kwai Chang Caine in that way. Ultimately, I'd rather watch DOA again. Re: Tekken - El Dingo - 10-08-2010 I liked the post-apocalyptic set design and game-show atmosphere of the fights. The first half is much better than the second. It wasn't great but wasn't terrible. Much better than 'Double Dragon', 'Street Fighter' and the 'Mortal Kombat' movies. Then again, I've never played the 'Tekken' game. that's so funny - Drunk Monk - 10-11-2010 i had this thought at the beginning during the 'surge of delight to know that someone was still making films like this' phase. i thought about how dated that post-apocalyptic set looked and was remembering - with fondness - all those great flicks that we watched in that genre. d.o.a. was the best of the vid fight game flicks, imo. mind you, i didn't see street fighter or double dragon. i saw the first mortal kombat and maybe another... |
