"The Club Dumas" - Arturo Perez-Reverte - El Dingo - 01-17-2006
I had picked up The Club Dumas for my dad last Christmas.
He read it and passed it back to me (always buy people books you want to borrow).
The story revolves around a rare-book hunter and mercenary who is hired to validate the existence of 3 books on demonolgy, supposedly that contain the secret of summoning the Debbil!:twisted:
Simultaneously he is asked to authenticate an original manuscript of a "Three Musketeers" chapter.
He travels around the world evading shady characters and hooking up with even shadier ones. He grows increasingly paranoid as people who he talks to start falling victim to foul play. Eventually he returns to his employer(s) for a twisted ending.
Johnny Depp fans amy recognize the occult book storyline was the basis for "The 9th Gate".
Somewhat more of a head-trip than "The Da Vinci Code" but still a fun read if you enjoy periodic meanderings about old books.
Now I guess I'll have to read "The Three Musketeers" so I can understand all the references.

Perez-Reverte is one of my fave authors, even before The Fencing Master. Look for his latest to come out in movie form with Viggo Mortensen. But I digress.
Club Dumas is often just Arturo thumbing his nose at Umberto Eco and Foucault's Pendulum.
