Rachel Getting Married - Greg_phpbb3_import1 - 03-16-2009 Wow. Who knew a film about a recently released from rehab addict who goes to her sister's wedding would be such a downer? I don't know why Anne Hathaway got the Academy Award nomination for this portrayal because it didn't seem to be that extraordinary. Maybe because it was so far out of her wheelhouse? It's kind of brutal little film. The drama isn't leavened by any relapses into humor. Basically, Kim goes straight from the center to the wedding rehearsal. It's all shot very cinema verite. Demme must have had plenty of film because he is content to let the scenes run on and on, giving you the feeling you are right there in the moment. Gradually, the reasoning for the disfunction is doled out. There's divorce. There's selfishness. There's drug use. And to top it all off, there is death. It almost would make the perfect suicide double feature with Ordinary People. But this film isn't nearly as good as Ordinary People. The film ends at the end of the wedding. No grand statements. No grand resolutions. The wedding is over and it's back to rehab. All very ugly. You could see it for the worst wedding toast ever. You could see it for biggest buzzkill ever while loading the dish washer. Get Smart - Drunk Monk - 03-30-2009 missed it by THAT much :vom: Becoming Jane - Drunk Monk - 03-30-2009 Starring Mr. Tumnus, Professor McGonagal, Mrs. Weasley, Farmer Hoggett, and of course, our own dear Ella. I hear there's a book out titled Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. This film would have been much more enjoyable if all these actors were doing that story. I'm a bit Hathawayed out now. |
