People are like ‘so you oversee dorms or what?’ Too much Monty Python in my developmental years forever messed up my perception of knickers. Did I ever tell you about the Italian kung fu shoes? RE: HWY17 - Dr. Ivor Yeti - 06-09-2018 Italian kung-fu shoes? Do tell! RE: HWY17 - Drunk Monk - 07-20-2018 Summer fri suckage RE: HWY17 - Drunk Monk - 07-21-2018 (06-09-2018, 10:36 PM)Dr. Ivor Yeti Wrote: Italian kung-fu shoes? Do tell! So Wing Lam had several Italian disciples and was brought there to teach by his loyal Italian students several times. I like to think it was somewhat the result of an article I wrote that was translated to Italian in a mag called Samurai Banzai Pulgalto (or something like that) but it was more likely that me selling that article was a result of his travels there. We wore these handmade Hong Kong Kung Fu shoes - they were funky little booties that snapped in the back and had no soles with treads made from recycled tire sidewalls. Fell apart if you got them wet. They weren't that expensive, but they were a pain in the butt because they would wear out quickly. Sifu never required them, but everyone at the school wore them, so I did too. Impossible to find those now. No one makes them anymore. Sifu's Italian students hated them, absolutely hated them, even more than me. I mean, Italian shoes, 'nuf said right? So one of his students had some Italian shoemaker craft some, and they were nice. Fine leather, beautiful suede, real soles and tread. They were expensive and I never got a pair. I should have, but they seemed so ridiculous to me at the time. I hated those booties back then. As soon as I went to Shaolin, I switched to Feiyues and I've never gone back. I regret not having any now, just as mementos. RE: HWY17 - Dr. Ivor Yeti - 07-21-2018 I regret not having any Italian shoes, too, but in a more general way. RE: HWY17 - cranefly - 07-21-2018 Lady Cranefly and I donned old pairs of those shoes for the funeral -- the mourning lion dance, specifically. They were a bit tattered, but no one was likely to see them. Except that my shoes were often exposed as I was the butt and we were on our knees, and sometimes we went backwards. Still, in hindsight, an appropriate nod to Sifu. BTW, I just looked up the Italian for the word 'yeti'. It's 'yeti'. You're welcome. I'm sorry I missed that. That reminds me that I tasked Stephen to do an article on the mourning lion ritual. I'll have to remember follow up on that on Monday. Hit it late tofay out of Campbell because I got a trim from Jennifer. Today is her 10 years sober milestone. We both reflected on how we weren’t at RotR. RE: HWY17 - Dr. Ivor Yeti - 08-03-2018 Good for her! That is fantastic! RE: HWY17 - Drunk Monk - 08-04-2018 (08-03-2018, 09:17 PM)Dr. Ivor Yeti Wrote: Good for her! That is fantastic! Right? RE: HWY17 - Drunk Monk - 11-28-2018 Woken by the rain. My commute is gonna suck. RE: HWY17 - Drunk Monk - 01-17-2019 Crossed around 10ish in the thick of the storm. Southbound to summit was the worst I’ve ever seen - mudslides in several places, road flooded at least half a foot deep in many spots, rocks and branches scattered everywhere. But we made it at about 40 mph. |
