Seems like hitting each other with swords could be made much less complicated...

The Abbey Road pic is the best...

Sumo Tourists in London

I’m totally charmed by these snaps of some of the best sumo wrestlers in the world touring London.

The athletes were in London for a 5-day event at the Royal Albert Hall.
Quote:London’s Victorian concert venue has been utterly transformed, complete with six-tonne Japanese temple roof suspended above the ring.

It is here the wrestlers, known as rikishi, will perform their leg stomps to drive away evil spirits, and where they will clap to get the attention of the gods.

And above all this ancient ceremony, a giant, revolving LED screen which wouldn’t look out of place at an American basketball game, offering the audience all the stats and replays they could want.

Sumo may be ancient, and may have strict rules governing every aspect of a rikishi’s conduct, but it still exists in a modern world.

And that modern world is helping spread sumo far beyond Japan’s borders.

The tournament has already concluded; the winner, Hoshoryu, was given a giant bottle of soy sauce:

I like the Harry Potter & Kikoman pix.

I've been following the highlights. It was a very successful event. I'd love to see this if it ever comes here.

There's another Sumo & Sushi event coming - it's not the top wrestlers but every time it comes through, I consider going. Tix are pricey tho = $100-500 range.

WTAF Alpha Blondy?

RE: It's my martial arts world - King Bob - 11-17-2025

It's a salute to Yasuke? Or a salute to the Blaxploitation film of that name?

RE: It's my martial arts world - Drunk Monk - 11-17-2025

Alpha Blondy does some of the best reggae covers but he can be whacked. I had a break with him when he came out against abortion & homosexuality. A lot of Rasta go there.

COUNT ME IN: SWORD KICKING

This is a video of acrobatic conceptor Dave Locke kicking swords at a dummy strapped to a wheel of death (at least I hope it’s a dummy). I couldn’t tell if Dave was trying to hit the dummy, or just hit around it. Because he only succeeds in hitting around it, which now that I think about it was probably the goal. Me? I would have pinned that dummy to the wheel with my swords like a taxidermied beetle. “In a shadowbox with legs missing?” Exactly.

Thanks to Alyssa, who agrees why kick rocks when you can kick swords?
