RE: I'm more broken than you - Greg - 07-10-2022 I walked a little more than the current normal and the knee is back to feeling tender. Now, do I just ignore the pain and walk more or do I rest it? I kind of grew up in the push through the pain school but I don't know if that is the best course. When I'm in Pain, Should I Exercise or Rest? Stay active, when you can On the whole, the answer is "keep moving." Your joints were made to move. They need movement to nourish the joint and keep the muscles around the joint strong and limber. Doctors encourage their patients with arthritis to be as active as they can—as long as it isn't exacerbating joint pain. https://www.arthritis-health.com/blog/when-im-pain-should-i-exercise-or-rest = = = = = Cranefly here. This probably isn't telling you anything you don't already know. I pretty much subscribe to this. But it's always tricky deciding whether you're helping with circulation, etc., or venturing into exacerbation of the problem. As always, standard disclaimer. Not a doctor (though I sometimes play one in my dreams). RE: I'm more broken than you - Dr. Ivor Yeti - 07-10-2022 I agree with CF. Keep moving if you can, with the usual caveats. I have no cartilage in either knee and a fair amount of arthritis, but the habit of moving is all that is keeping me going. I’m functional for work and getting around on *flat* surfaces, but there is no way I could attempt a backpacking trip. RE: I'm more broken than you - Greg - 07-10-2022 Very good. Thanks for the help. RE: I'm more broken than you - King Bob - 07-11-2022 TG - had not thought of Darren in years. Sorry to hear that. Sometimes I regret I'm not on FB to connect with old friends, but I just can't trust the FB people enough to do it. Bad enough being on Instagram, but a bunch of artists I like are on there. I have thought about going to Tumblr. Recently I was reading a post by a coach I like (Dan John), and he said that you can pretty much live however you want, and you'll very likely make it to 55 okay. But then thing start to get you. So true. RE: I'm more broken than you - Drunk Monk - 07-12-2022 It was great to see my old chiropractor. She's been taking care of me since I was first diagnosed back in 2008. She had to move her office - it has been in a converted house, but now that's being rented out by a family. She still maintains the garage, which was formally her yoga studio - now it's her office and zoom yoga studio. And there's a dog now - Finn. He's a tiny terrier kinda dog - a lap dog and very calming as I waited for my session. She gave me several exercises and ways to perform self traction. She said my posture is terrible now (she's an Iyengar yoga instructor) and while she wasn't about to confirm the medical diagnosis, she could see how improved posture might help. I've been doing most of my work lying down. I have a beautiful workstation at home, the best one I've ever had, but I can only sit there for an hour or so before my body starts to hurt. My pain wasn't too bad over the last two days because I've been working lying down. I've also get a better sense of how to use my meds. Nevertheless, when the pain comes, it's hard. So deep - nerve disruption. I've experienced so many new sensations of pain over the last few weeks that I never knew before. I had a good chat with my mom about it. Her pain must have been similar because it was her broken spine pinching her nerves. She had the most pain in her forelegs. Now she's in no pain at all because she's on gabapentin and nsaids. It's the gaba that's doing the trick. That's a neural. But I know already that I can't take gaba, from the last time I went down this path. I get too spacey. There's a staircase loading dose protocol and I only went up a few steps and got way too high. I remember driving through the stoplight that was nearest to Ranch Macbeth, and having a total blank about where I was. It was so psychedelic - I had driven across that intersection so many times. It was like the balloon of my mind popped. I remember thinking 'I AM TRIPPIN and DRIVIN. NOOOOO! Okay, okay, it's cool. Just get through this stoplight, pull into that parking lot, park, and get out and walk around for a bit. I know I'm close to home.' After walking around the strip mall for a bit, I got some clarity, enough to drive home. Soon after, I tossed all that gaba out. That shit felt good tho. Real good. RE: I'm more broken than you - Greg - 07-13-2022 Wow. My father had bottles and bottles of gabapentin in the house, at least a thousand pills. I had no idea what it was. I just knew he had a lot of it. RE: I'm more broken than you - Greg - 07-13-2022 IBUPROFEN! Why didn't you guys tell me? Seriously, took some between walks and the ibuprofen lowered the discomfort considerably. I'll be eating them now like M&Ms because how could that possibly go wrong? RE: I'm more broken than you - Drunk Monk - 07-13-2022 Srsly? Took you this long to get here? Ibu is such a go to for me 4 otc ibu (200) = 1 Rx Motrin Take with food or it’ll catch up with you. I’m alternating 800 ibu and 500 aceto, taking 1 or the other every 3-4 hours, sometimes swapping in a norco when needed. RE: I'm more broken than you - Greg - 07-13-2022 I'm not a big fan of the pills. I took 600ibu. It seemed to act pretty quickly. I'm hoping not to get into a cycle where I need to take a lot of them to function. I had them after breakfast. RE: I'm more broken than you - Drunk Monk - 07-13-2022 (07-13-2022, 07:48 AM)Greg Wrote: I'm not a big fan of the pills. Me neither. Prior to this recent malady, I was taking 4 a day. Now I'm taking a dozen or so (counting all 4(200)ibu as one if I go that way) RE: I'm more broken than you - Dr. Ivor Yeti - 07-13-2022 800mg every 8 hours until the pain decreases or your kidney explodes out of your torso. Wow, that came out rather dictatorial. Lemme try again. 600 is a good start, but 800 was what multiple doctors have recommended to me during my kidney stone phase and various knee, wrist, achilles, and elbow problems. Just so you know you can bump it up above the 600mgs if you need to. I’m glad you are getting some relief. You're in Germany eating strudel and hasenpfeffer I imagine, so we understand. But yeah, 800 is a motrin. It was actually Jennifer B who told me that decades ago, as a hangover cure. RE: I'm more broken than you - Greg - 07-13-2022 Please don't invade Poland. RE: I'm more broken than you - Drunk Monk - 07-13-2022 And ya know, if 600 is doing the trick, go with it. Try to get it back down to 200, or best of all, none. Not looking forward to weaning myself from all these drugs, especially the norco. But my mom put me to shame when it came to detox. She was on a rigorous schedule of oxy, and one day, she just quit, cold turkey, no titration. I hope I inherited those genetics. I did manage to do that with beer when the carbs were pushing my diabetes over the edge. |
