I ate really well yesterday. Told ya bout bfast already. Lunch was this awesome Mexican place Ranchos Cocina in North Park. Dinner was a splurge at Piazza 1909. The day was spent book crawling, checking out odd art shops, newsstands and military surplus stores with Tara as the local guide, and watching a lovely sunset.
Vacay is good. Today is the last day. Tomorrow, back to the salt mine.

Well here I am again in SD. We’re super close to the Mormon temple next to UCSC. It dominates the landscape. Not planning on doing much tho with covid blues. Visit Tara when she has time but she has school and work and I don’t want to cramp her. Fortunately her roommate is understanding. The hotel is okay until Yuki gets stir crazy and starts chewing on everything. Stacy is feeling better but we’re both spent.
If you told me on Wednesday I’d be here...

Had a lovely evening with Tara & Bri. Stacy made an awesome salad from all the produce we got from our delivery last week, the one where some beast stole my nite cheese that we picked up on our kamikaze run back to the Cruz after Carmel. I got some gluten free vegan dressings that everyone enjoyed. We took the dogs to their apartment dog park which shares a wall with the Mormon temple. Tara brought me a sea foam tea - she works at Ding Tea which is a boba franchise and this is their version of cheese tea. We watched a Dr Who Ep, the one with Van Gogh, which was shot in D’Orsay in part and had an hp1 - minister of magic while the dogs played and I reconnected with the cat. Very nice night. So needed given the chaos of the fires.

Made it for the beach this morning but it was packed. Got breakfast at Pannikin which has a lovely covid-safe drive thru set up and made it for another beach. That wasn't as packed but getting there.
Yuki found some tasty sand and while we were pulling him away and trying to climb the rocks to get back to the street, some lady got in the way and Yuki panicked and bit Stacy pretty badly. Puppy tooth punctures that bled profusely. A crowd of masked gawkers jammed out escape. Some people just freeze when they see blood. It was very frustrating but we got out. I keep a medikit in my car and got her patched up. Bad pup.
We'll head over to Tara's soon. They plan a trip to the farmer's market but Stacy will probably just stay with the dogs and I'll go. It'll probably be a covid party, but I'll mask up. Stacy just wants to lay low for the rest of the day.
Need to get gas and wash the ash off the car.

Stacy got up early (her coffee needs require this) and took Yuki somewhere but probably not the beach given yesterday's sand poop incident (see http://www.brotherhoodofdoom.com/doomForum/showthread.php?tid=693&pid=40641#pid40641).
Today is Tara's day off but she worked late last night so she won't be rising soon. I stopped by her job at a Boba tea place and took her to dinner at the next door Himalayan restaurant, so we had a nice half hour to connect.
Now I'm enjoying a breakfast of leftover nite cheese (whiskey cheddar - yum) and leftover roadtrip snax (chili cheese fritos) don't judge mmkay? I'm a wildfire refugee.
Below the hotel is an OrangeTheory gym. They're working out outside and I've been listening to it all morning.
Things are looking better in the Cruz. Containment is happening and neighbors are reporting less smoke. A lot depends on this dry lighting gusty wind thing. Our other favorite retreat - Nisene Marks - caught fire but it was contained to an acre. Our hotel deal expires tomorrow so we may return.

The positive outcome of the fires has been that we had a great visit with Tara. Yesterday after Birdrock (highly recommended caffeine dispensary if you're ever in SD here, btw) we found a bench overlooking the sea and had some real quality time. Then we picked up lunch at Plant Power, which is this veg take on in-and-out that is superb, and hung out at their apt watching Dr. Who. We took a break, then came back for dinner, which Tara cooked (mapo tofu) and watched some Down to Earth with Zac Efron, which totally re-frames him as an engaged environmental activist. It got past Stacy's bedtime so I dropped her and Yuki back at the hotel (which is only 3 blocks away - walkable but we never bothered) and returned to geek out with Tara about the geek stuff we both follow, mostly ATLA. She showed me a lot of tiktok vids and some youtube stuff. We watched the DC fandome trailers. It was really good to reconnect.
Stacy went on her coffee breaky run, and to get Yuki to a dog park to get him some running amuck time before the long road home. We'll probably leave in an hour or so. We're packed complete with road snacks and a tank of gas.

The drive back went smoothly except when Yuki tried to eat more sand during his break on Ventura beach. The only perturbing thing was seeing several tRump flags.
Note to self: next time I’m fleeing catastrophe, pack pjs and a kid.
I’ll put the crucial documents back in the safe later.
