RE: The Dead - Greg - 08-22-2021

Saw this story and thought of you, which is a very weird take.

RE: The Dead - King Bob - 08-22-2021

I do play the ukulele

RE: The Dead - Drunk Monk - 08-22-2021

Legbone & I restrained a balcony jumper at a Phil & Friends show at BGC. LB was one of my best restraint Krew partners. Between the two of us, we could takedown just about anyone.

That jumper was fine, except he was trippin ballz. The poor gal he landed on was not.

As for the ukes, was there ever a uke on the GD stage? I guess anything goes for mercy now. There needs to be an official GD tuba next.

RE: The Dead - Greg - 08-22-2021

I was with you for a flyer at one concert. She was jumping off the chairs in the balcony. and bruised herself.

RE: The Dead - Drunk Monk - 08-22-2021

Really? When was that? I forgot that one.

We had several at the Warfield. And there was that dude who climbed the canopy at shoreline. He fell, sliding down the back and leaving a streak we had to look at from RM for the rest of the season until the winter rains washed it away. Landed backstage near a tour bus.

I remembered that I wrote up an account of this for an intro to something completely different.

The cfs appear in this too.

I debated whether this was in violation of HIPPA but it happened in front of the public and maybe someone even caught video. It was a gruesome scene.

RE: The Dead - Greg - 08-23-2021

Our flyer might have been in Long Beach. it was the end of the night. It was a young girl, very flirty. I think she was trying to jump off the backs of chairs and injured herself. She didn't want to deal with you, so she was handed off to the EMTs

Heard that story too many times before. Too many times.

Yeah, I was thinking Long Beach but I only have one remaining memory of that. That was the dirt racetrack where they gave us a stupid 10x10 pop up and a chair. Not even sufficient. And we had some patient puking when you were the closest with the bucket, so you became the honorary bucket holder. The expression on your face, that look of disgust with the puke vapors start assailing your nostrils, was priceless and exacerbated by that always awesome GD light show. I remember laughing with Joel and Babs, and them saying something like "Are you going to help your friend?" and me saying "Oh hell no" and all of us laughing even more at your expense.

But great job. Srsly. If you ever need a letter of recommendation, I'll be happy to testify as to what a great puke bucket holder you are.

RE: The Dead - Greg - 08-23-2021

You are thinking of the Ventura Racetrack. Long Beach Civic auditorium was the place with the girl. I also got to see a nice man try and pee in a cup after he disrobed.

RE: The Dead - Drunk Monk - 08-23-2021

Right. Ventura. Only worked that the one time.

I’ve got tons of pee stories. Gallons. Glad you got a taste of my world. It’s my way of paying you back for the set visit.

Last night, Dead & Company performed in Bethel Woods, New York at the site of the original 1969 Woodstock music festival. Their performance 52 years ago was infamously plagued by a confluence of problems that Bob Weir once said was "was probably the worst set we've ever performed." Of course Weir was exaggerating, but it wasn't a high point in their musical career either. So Monday, Dead and Company had a re-do of the same song sequence and the results were wonderful. Setlist below after the music. Here's Bobby Weir on what happened at Woodstock, from a 1989 interview quoted today in Rolling Stone:
Quote:"It was raining toads when we played," Weir told Rolling Stone in 1989. "The rain was part of our nightmare. The other part was our sound man, who decided that the ground situation on stage was all wrong. It took him about two hours to change it, which held up the show."
"He finally got it the way he wanted it," he continued, "but every time I touched my instrument, I got a shock. The stage was wet, and the electricity was coming through me. I was conducting! Touching my guitar and the microphone was nearly fatal. There was a big blue spark about the size of a baseball, and I got lifted off my feet and sent back eight to 10 feet to my amplifier."

Jerry Garcia with the Grateful Dead perform at the Greek Theater in Berkeley, Calif. on July 15, 1984.

Legendary jam band also offering classic shows on Coda Collection.
Sotheby's announced the upcoming From the Vault: Property from the Grateful Dead and Friends on Wednesday (Aug. 25), which will feature a variety of items from the legendary San Francisco jam band.
Among the items up for bid culled from the collections of Grateful Dead Productions and the group's inner circle are late lead singer-guitarist Jerry Garcia's stage-used 12-string Guild Starfire guitar (estimate $50,000-$70,000), as well as 1990s-era stage racks used by Garcia and fellow singer-guitarist Bob Weir (estimated $10,000-$15,000 each) and Garcia's beloved McIntosh 2300 amplifier with "Budman" sticker ($5,000-$7,000).
According to a release announcing the online auction -- slated to take place from Oct. 7-14 -- it will explore "the vast cultural impact of the Grateful Dead, and is highlighted by stage equipment from all eras of Grateful Dead tours including surviving components from the legendary Wall of Sound, as well as Jerry Garcia’s stage-used equipment and other touring equipment. There will also be personal items from crew members “Big” Steve Parish and Lawrence “Ram Rod” Shurtliff, including the latter's psychedelic jumpsuit (estimated $20,000-$30,000).

A public preview will be on display at Sotheby’s York Avenue galleries from Aug. 19-30, and the full sale contents will be revealed in a public exhibition at York Avenue Oct. 9-13. “The Grateful Dead are renowned around the world as one of the most famous and beloved bands of all time — attracting an incredibly devoted and loyal community of fans formed over decades that transformed the group into a touchstone of pop culture that goes far beyond just their music," said Richard Austin, Sotheby’s global head of books & manuscripts in a statement.
"In carefully curating the auction to capture the spirit of the band and the community that it supported, it is especially gratifying to have worked directly with Grateful Dead Productions and their inner circle to select objects that chart the earliest beginnings of the Grateful Dead throughout their legendary career, while illustrating the vast influence of the band’s musical and cultural legacy."
Other items in the sale include:
  • Garcia's frequently used, cigarette-burned blackface Fender Twin Reverb shell ($2,000-$3,000).

  • A chemistry set from legendary "King of LSD" chemist Owlsley "Bear" Stanley ($10,000-$15,000).

  • Garcia's skull-embroidered custom Nudie pants; worn during a few shows in Texas ($20,000-$30,000)

  • Pieces from the band's legendary "wall of sound" system -- the largest concert sound system ever made at the time -- created by Stanley for the Dead's 1974 tour, including McIntosh amps, hand-built stage cabinets used by Weir, Garcia and drummer Mickey Hart (est. from $2,000).

  • Hart's stage-used Sonar drum set with cymbals and hardware (est. $10,000-$15,000)

The Dead and Rhino Records announced on Wednesday that they've teamed with the  Coda Collection to host a series of exclusive archival content, kicking off with the streaming debuts of three concert films from one of the band’s most beloved eras (1989-1991). The shows include Live in Foxboro 7/2/89, the group's summer tour opener from Foxboro, Mass., which will premiere on the channel on Wednesday.
The other films include Live in Washington, D.C. 7/12/89 (which will premiere on Sept. 8) and Live at Giants Stadium 6/17/91 (coming Sept. 29), which features Bruce Hornsby on keyboards and the first "Dark Star Jam" since 1974

Keen + Garcia

Keen shoes are my brand. They’ve released a collection of sandals based of Jerry’s artwork.

Quote:GRATEFUL DEAD T-SHIRTS BECOME MOST EXPENSIVE ROCK SHIRTS EVER SOLD AT AUCTION

Last week, a vintage Grateful Dead T-shirt from 1967 sold at auction for a record-breaking $17,640.
That makes it the most expensive vintage rock shirt ever auctioned, per the San Francisco Chronicle.
In the same Sotheby's auction, called "From the Vault: Property from the Grateful Dead and Friends," a 1977 Dead tee went for $15,120. That one's said to now be the second most expensive vintage rock shirt ever sold.
Both garments are in great shape for their age. The 1967 T-shirt, a yellow Russell Southern Co. brand tee with a screen-printed logo, is one of the first the Dead ever mass-produced, albeit in small quantities.
It hails from the era around the act's earliest performances in the San Francisco area, and it was originally owned by Dan Healy, an audio engineer who often worked with the Dead, as reported by Defunkd. The shirt's logo was designed by Allan "Gut" Terk, a Hells Angel and "Merry Prankster" known as a key 1960s California countercultural figure.
The 1977 tee was also Healy's and comes from a gig at Cornell University. It's faded with red ringers and sports the band's classic "Steal Your Face" logo on the front.
Max Bittle, an expert vintage tee collector, remarked, "The Cornell concert is widely considered to be the pinnacle of Grateful Dead live shows. Obviously, it's amazing that an event shirt even exists and to see it go for more than $15k is just mind-blowing. When the auction went live I thought it might fetch $2-4K, so to do as well as it did is just simply amazing."

Designed by the Hells Angel, Merry Prankster, and graphic artist Allan 'Gut' Terk, a key figure in California counterculture in the 1960’s. Friends with Ken Kesey, he was the painter of the Pranksters' 'Further' bus in 1964 and designed the Acid Test Graduation posters. By 1967, through his work for the Dead, he was acclaimed in the Bay Area music scene for his T-shirt and poster art.

The legendary 8 May 1977 show at Barton Hall, Cornell University. Many consider this to be the 'Holy Grail' of the Dead's performances, and recordings of it were collected and traded for years. In 2012, a recording of the performance from the original soundboard was selected for inclusion in the National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress, due to its cultural significance.

Damn. I gotz some GD tees... anyone else buying?

RE: The Dead - Greg - 10-28-2021

I heard this story and I was hoping you had some of these in your collection. I'm guessing the ones you have are 3 for $12
