RE: I'm more broken than you - Drunk Monk - 08-30-2021

My keyboarding has been declining lately. I’m saying it’s because I’m switching between different keyboards so much lately. Mac keyboards are dumb.

RE: I'm more broken than you - King Bob - 08-30-2021

My handwriting has declined because I just don't do it much.

RE: I'm more broken than you - thatguy - 08-30-2021

For a second data point, you could write and send me a large check...

Those checks are in the mail!

Are the keys in different positions on the Mac Keyboard....?

My handwriting has always been bad. I blame it on breaking my thumb upside some kid's head in elementary school. It's so bad I can't read a lot of my notes. I was just thinking I should start cultivating cursive again.

Yeah, a few are. Keys backspace are missing. More aggravating is the position of control and Fn are swapped, and Mac has command instead of alt. The mouse is problematic too. It's tiresome to switch back and forth. And because my Surface Pro is next to my Mac, sometimes I'll be mousin for the wrong machine.

Mouse or trackpad? You can toggle the scroll direction ("Natural" vs unnatural?) in System Preferences -> Trackpad. You can probably do the same under System Preferences -> Mouse, but I don't have one on hand to verify...

Not sure where your delete key went. It should be 2 keys directly above the return (not enter) key

Which mac keyboard did you end up with? If it's really bothersome, you can use a windows USB keyboard instead, but just remember that "Alt" key on a non-mac keyboard = the "option" on a Mac keyboard (which you might use frequently on the Mac...)

fn + del is forward delete
opt + del is delete word (to the left of the cursor)

I once got a test laptop that came with a french (or maybe italian) keyboard. That was an exercise in frustration.

I got a delete key. I don't have a backspace. It's usually below the del.

I switch back and forth between mouse, trackpad and touch screen.

This is how I feel:

DM - funny you mention cultivating cursive. I hate the look of the Palmer Method cursive we learned, but there is a modified italic hand (the Getty-Dubay Method) so it looks nice and you can write it quickly. I have thought about learning how to do it off and on for a long time.

RE: I'm more broken than you - Drunk Monk - 08-30-2021

That’s a new one on me. Got Link?

I was tripping on relearning Tiger hooks, these freaking absurd ancient blades, and started pondering the pen and sword thing as I often do and thought I should cultivate my cursive stroke as a meditation/expression. It’s just trippin tho. I trip over all sorts of dumb crap and seldom follow through unless there’s a deadline and paycheck nowadays.

Dm did get a little mycological on Saturday. Micro little but enough to get a sliver of a shiver, and to tweak late into the night...

But back to G’s dizzy spells...

RE: I'm more broken than you - Greg - 08-31-2021

Better but still humming there. Especially when I bend over to grab the pets.

RE: I'm more broken than you - Drunk Monk - 08-31-2021

There’s a ‘grab the pussy’ comment here but it makes my head spin.

And I’m lying in bed staring at my phone. I should go back to sleep. No point in being conscious right now...

I guess today is going to be a dizzy day. I am getting a lot of practice on maintaining my balance if I ever do get drunk.

RE: I'm more broken than you - cranefly - 09-11-2021

Any update on the dizziness?  If it's still a problem, I'll give my two cents worth.

The last thing I did in trying to pin down my problem was see a ENT specialist.  Among other things, he checked me for BPPV.  Nope.

But then he gave me a pep talk.  He said that sometimes the brain and body get out of register for no apparent reason.  It happened to a friend of his back in college.  It even happened to the doc himself more recently.  In both cases it went away after a month or two.  He gave me a set of exercises designed to recalibrate the mind/body connection.  Here's some examples.  From a sitting position, stand up, circle in place clockwise, sit down.  Stand up, circle in place counterclockwise, sit down.  Repeat 10 times.  Variation:  Do this exercise with the eyes closed.  Another exercise.  From a sitting position, toss a ball from one hand to the other in a high arc well overhead, following it with your eyes.  Toss it back the other way.  Repeat at least 10 times.  Another exercise.  Standing, lift the right leg and pass a ball under it from right hand to left hand.  Lift the left leg and pass the ball under it from left to right hand.  Repeat 10 times.  Another exercise.  In a room with some space, target a place across the room, close your eyes, and walk across to it.  Be careful with this one.  Repeat 10 times.  There are a few others.  I was to do these exercises three times a day for two weeks, then check back with him.

Well, I did them for two weeks, got nothing out of it, and didn't see him again.  But that's because I'm a quitter.  Actually, some of my martial arts activities, especially bagua, are far more challenging, and I was doing those as well.  Maybe there was something special about the dizziness exercises, and I should have stuck with them.  But I didn't.

But seeing an ENT might be something to do, if the problem persists, and maybe some recalibration exercises would help you more than they did me.

RE: I'm more broken than you - Drunk Monk - 09-11-2021

Another good recalibrater is a fistful of shrooms.

Er, so I’m told ...

RE: I'm more broken than you - Greg - 09-15-2021

Now you tell me about the shrooms.

I think I'm going to blame the dizziness, which has subsided, on my drone work down in Los Angeles. I spent the day with my head tilted back looking up in the sky. The next day, the dizziness started. Now, yes, just because one happened before the other does mean cause and effect. But during the week, the dizziness ebbed and flowed in severity but it had pretty much waned by the end of the week. On Sunday, i went out to film Raymond from the drone. As soon as I tilted my head back to see the drone in the sky, a huge wave of dizziness rolled over me. I had to lean against the car to stay upright. It's a thought.

I did look into the exercises to alleviate the symptoms and I will probably try them if the dizziness occurs again.
