RE: I'm more broken than you - cranefly - 05-12-2021 Damn. Now I want to rewatch that trilogy. Today the bandage came off and nothing replaces it. I got my first good look at the smiling face in the mirror. Actually, it's more straight than that. Let's call it a Mona Lisa smile. The home care guy said there are scar-reduction creams or films you can use to reduce the scar, if it matters to you. I'm tempted to try one for the helluvit. I'm leaning towards Mederma right now. But LCF suggested I consult DM, who has used such stuff. Any recommendations? RE: I'm more broken than you - Drunk Monk - 05-12-2021 (05-12-2021, 11:43 AM)cranefly Wrote: Damn. Now I want to rewatch that trilogy. You know, I've never watched it. I started the first one but bailed. It just didn't work for me. I blame ED for burying so much PTSD with this sort of cinema deeply in my brain. (05-12-2021, 11:43 AM)cranefly Wrote: But LCF suggested I consult DM, who has used such stuff. Any recommendations? Rub dirt in it. Just kidding. I just wanted to make LCF remember why she should never advise you to seek my advice. Here's the real advice (far be it from me to challenge a Jeopardy champ and I'm astonished and honored that she'd bother to remember that I've got a lot of scars with her brain stuffed with facts about the Yellow River and such...) I have used a lot of these sorts of products. Scar Away and Mederma are pretty good, although pricey. I'd recommend starting with those, then moving to a cheaper alternative like just a Vitamin E gel (I use that now after every bath) and aloe (I have a huge plant in my yard that I should harvest for this but I've been using a store bought gel). I also used abrasive scrubbing gloves in the shower to help slough off old skin. But truth be told, scars are hard dispel. I've found that using scar treatments like these helps with the initial healing process but at a certain point, you just gotta live with them. I used to tan them off, or at least reduce them, lighten them a little. I'm not supposed to tan anymore because of one of the rx meds I'm on that makes me photosensitive. Scars are sexy. Just keep telling yourself that. Schlaeger anyone? One of my fav Dylan lyrics: I've still got the scars that the sun didn't heal RE: I'm more broken than you - cranefly - 05-30-2021 Well, it's been a month since the right hip replacement. I've been using a cane the last couple weeks. I keep thinking I'm about to leave it behind but nope. Amazing how it supplements the stride with just the lightest touch, and yet without it, the stride goes bonkers. Instinctively when I have to carry something, I put it in my left hand. That instinct is always wrong. The left hand needs the cane. But I keep making it. It's like Sharon Stone crossing her legs the wrong way. You'd think I'd learn. The left hip is scheduled for June 18. Yeah, doesn't give me much time. But I want to get this over with. This Spring and Summer are shot, unfortunately. Then again, last year's Spring and Summer were shot by the virus, and this one mostly too, for everyone. I hear that it takes 3 months for the bone/artificial stuff to mend. That's when you can resume most regular activities. It'll take a year for all to heal to full strength, normally. LCF hurt her back a couple days ago. The usual mistake. She saw grownups with a litte girl who wanted a drink at a drinking fountain. The low drink was broken, and the grownups weren't strong enough to lift her up. So LCF volunteered. It turned out to require a very inadvisable pose. She came home pretty much out of commission. So I had to get my own beer. [That last bit is a joke. I haven't drank beer in a long while.] RE: I'm more broken than you - Drunk Monk - 05-30-2021 (05-30-2021, 04:49 PM)cranefly Wrote: It's like Sharon Stone crossing her legs the wrong way. What does that even mean? ![]() Fingers (and legs) crossed for your successful operation. RE: scar removal. I've been experimenting with a new product (for me) and getting good results. https://www.aveeno.com/products/soothing-bath-treatment It's more for bites but it seems to be reducing some scar tissue too. RE: I'm more broken than you - cranefly - 05-31-2021 Sorry for the confusion about that Sharon Stone reference. There's some bavckground on that scene that's little known. When Verhoeven filmed it, he made a freshman film mistake. In fact, he considers it the biggest mistake of his career. He got his bearings wrong and had her cross her legs one way. Later on, he realized it didn't edit properly with the surrounding scenes. Sharon wasn't available by then for a reshoot, so he reshot the surrounding scenes to accommodate the mistake. He went through a couple million dollars with that, but it still didn't work. So at last he swallowed his pride and did something he swore never to do. He fixed it in post by mirroring the Sharon footage. It's hard to detect. You have to play the leg-crossing scene in ultra slomo. But if you have a sharp enough eye, you'll notice that Sharon's license plate is backwards. I cover this is a whole lot more detail in my upcoming book, The Hollywood That No One Knows. RE: I'm more broken than you - Greg - 05-31-2021 Since I worked on Basic Instinct and actually helped build the interrogation set, I can confirm CF's story. I guess I was hoping there would be more lasciviousness in a euphemistic way. RE: I'm more broken than you - Greg - 06-02-2021 A couple of days ago, my right foot big toe started to hurt. I get a lot of pain signals from my feet at this point. I didn't give it too much notice. I probably stubbed it. The pain would go away soon and I would move on to some other foot ailment. But no. The pain persisted. I paid more attention to the toe and gave it an examination. Much to my surprise, there were two dark dots on the underside of the toe. Further exploration revealed the dots were quite hard. This led to the conclusion that the dots were the top of something embedded in my toe. This can only mean one thing: Surgery! Fortunately, the Dowager Empress had gone to bed early so I could do the necessary on the comfort of my own couch in front of a horrified tQ. The first step in these situations is to give the area around the dots a good squeeze to see if you can make the offending material pop out with the pus. No luck this time. The pieces rose a little but not that satisfying explosion that means the job is over. Instead, I got to start digging at the dots with my tweezers. I was hoping that it was just one piece and the two dots represented either end of the offending material. But after I pulled the first piece out, the other dot remained. I had to dig it out. I was thinking of getting the matte knife out to do some judicious cutting because the dot proved to be recalcitrant but I eventually grabbed the head and got that piece out as well. Both pieces were the hard tips of foxtails. I must have jabbed them in there while I walked around the yard in sandals and no socks. RE: I'm more broken than you - King Bob - 06-02-2021 I think you mountain folk are supposed to wear boots. Maybe moccasins if you want to be more hippie-ish. RE: I'm more broken than you - Drunk Monk - 06-02-2021 Was that related to diabetic loss of toe sensitivity? Because usually when I'm stabbed in the toe by a thorn, I feel it. And if there are two, I feel it twice. There was the Grateful Dead run when I injured my toe. There was a weird discolored growth that was itchy and stiff. It was a weird one because I remember it was a run of day shows which were done by the evening, and then there was a David Lindley show at the Cat so we squeezed that in on a Sat night in between two day Dead shows. This was when I was in grad school at UCSC - 1st year - the only time in my life when I had my own apt by myself, so I invited some deadhead friends to crash at my place after that show. That was fun. The Sunday afterwards I discovered that my shower was clogged. Deadheads. Being a good host, I had let my guests shower and didn't get the chance to grab a shower myself so I was really jonzing for one, but I had to deal with the shower clog first, which was a pain in the ass. Late that night, I freed the drain and took my shower to examine my toe. Turned out it was just a bit of dirt that had lodged itself in an odd way and it washed off nicely. That's when I decided against the hippie lifestyle. I can play one at concerts but it's more for show. RE: I'm more broken than you - King Bob - 06-02-2021 I think I decided against the hippie lifestyle at a Dead show at the Kaiser (I think maybe my first show) - there was a clog in the men's bathroom, making the floor into a lake, and hippies were blithely wading through barefooted. RE: I'm more broken than you - Greg - 06-02-2021 Hey! My first Dead Show was at the Kaiser. I wore a fancy purple and gold shirt from New Orleans. I actually thought the puncture was some sort of blister at first. I didn't feel them going in. My feet aren't numb but they are thick with calluses. Boots are for the weak. RE: I'm more broken than you - Greg - 06-09-2021 My diabetes sugar crashes have decided to be on a schedule. Three days in a row. Right around 10:30am. Good times! RE: I'm more broken than you - Dr. Ivor Yeti - 06-09-2021 Just in time for Second Breakfast! RE: I'm more broken than you - cranefly - 06-11-2021 I am now in the "where's my cane?" stage of recovery. You know, where you park the cane to do something with both hands, then a bit later you realize you've been wandering about without it and have no idea where you left it. A good sign, though I shouldn't move around if I'm limping, as it will imprint on my brain as a bad habit that will be hard to break. So, gotta use the cane when I'm tired/sore to prevent the limp. I work out two hours a day. These are not Kung Fu workouts. They're rather lame and designed to exercise the full set of muscles going in and around the hip. The surgery left lots of vacancies around the new joint, and now it's a game of fill-in-the-blank -- preferably with muscle, not scar tissue. I've been taking this Kaiser online class from an instructor. It's a group exercise, but you don't really see the other classmates due to privacy concerns. I've been doing pretty well, but it's rather sobering when she tells me, "Cranefly, you need to work on your flexibility." You'd think with all my Kung Fu I'd be okay in that department. The stretch in question is the clamshell. You lie on your back, slide your heels up to your butt, so your knees are up and together, and then you open the knees outward. You can apply hand pressure on the insides of the thighs for more separation. When I started, I was stuck at a measly 90 degrees. That got the comment. After maybe 10 days, I'm now maybe 115 degrees. The hardest exercise is the Jane Fonda. What makes it extra hard for me is finding a place to do it. Ideally, you want a bed that abuts a wall. No can do. So you do it on the floor against the wall. The problem is, we have precious little runs of wall that are vacant. So, for the Jane Fonda, you lie on your side (surgical leg on top) wedged tightly against the wall. With your legs kept straight, you raise the top one along the wall. You don't want any hip rotation. So, I found maybe three feet of wall in my room. That's enough to give the hip through feet support against the wall. My torso is sort of free floating in a doorway. But it works. So we do Jane Fondas to finish off the work session. Ten of them, with holds, the longer the better. These are Phase IV exercises, by the way. It's the last stage, though I've heard rumors of a Phase V. It's not included in the package deal, however, and appears to cost extra. I've heard tantalizing hints that it includes an exercise called the Barbarella. But you have to buy a spacesuit. I suspect they don't have one to fit me very well. Changing the subject some, I've always wanted to see a sports show where retired professional linebackers 50-plus years old compete in sports events. They would show up in their wheelchairs and do their limited best. Yes, that's my commentary on football. But recently I stumbled across a video of Mary Lou Retton preparing for and going through hip replacement surgery. What the hell? Is this the cost of being a competitive gymnast these days? Then again, I now see that she was born with hip dysplasia, and gymnastics aggravated it over time. |
