RE: I'm more broken than you - cranefly - 04-08-2021 My plan is to start talking and to never stop. My big zinger (if I can remember) is, "Your ballroom dancing is no match for my Tai Chi." What lowers my opinion of aikido is the demos. Most martial arts demos seem reasonable depictions of hand-to-hand combat. But in the aikido demos I've seen, where there's multiple attackers against the sensei, they all rush in but carefully timed so they arrive one by one. And they have an arm extended or deliver a well-telegraphed punch so the sensei can deal with them like picking fruit. While the techniques used are impressive and no doubt can be effective, the presentation falls terribly short for me. I don't know any martial arts system that teaches one to rush straight at your opponent like that. It really becomes evident if you stop focusing on the sensei and just watch the inrushers. So, yeah. I always wonder how aikido deals with a counter puncher, or someone who fights you but with a strategy of not coming into grapple distance. RE: I'm more broken than you - cranefly - 04-08-2021 Well, I ordered some stuff. You know, tub transfer bench, post-op hip kit (grabbers, long shoe horn, etc.), so on. Some of this I could have gotten cheaper at Homestead/Lawrence Kaiser. But that doesn't strike me as a fun shopping experience. So I used Amazon. And now the phone calls are nonstop, the number always different, purportedly from Amazon, about a suspicious big charge from Akron OH, and please call to dispute it or you'll be charged. All day, the same message but from different numbers. So, a warning if you get in this boat. Amazon is super-convenient, but if you buy something from them that suggests frailty, someone's likely selling your info on the sly to a robocaller targeting the frail and the elderly. Could be Amazon, could be the specific store I bought from. That's my strong suspicion. P.S. I try to avoid Amazon, but damn they are convenient. RE: I'm more broken than you - King Bob - 04-08-2021 When Christina went in to have her parathyroid tumor (benign) removed, they put the rhythmic compression things on her legs right as she was going under and she said to the nurse, "This feels great! You should try it!" RE: I'm more broken than you - Drunk Monk - 04-08-2021 (04-08-2021, 06:32 PM)cranefly Wrote: P.S. I try to avoid Amazon, but damn they are convenient. Stacy orders a ton of stuff from Amazon Prime. All I get is ads for razors on facebook now. When we were being trained, our instructor said it was required knowledge to pass the exam, but they were obsolete and were being discontinued for use. The practical exam part that tested those just hadn't been updated. Yet another obsolete skill I have, like programming using punch cards, using correcting tape on typewriters, making graphs with letraset, and swordsmanship. RE: I'm more broken than you - cranefly - 04-25-2021 A patient in the queue ahead of me cancelled, and I was offered a move-up from May 5 to April 29. I said yes. LKF was still in bed at the time, so I couldn't consult her. When she got up and I told her, she was a little peeved, because her 2nd Moderna shot is May 1. Based on the experience of a whole lot of people, May 2 will likely be miserable, and she's concerned she won't be able to tend to me. I told her we'll deal with it. It's not like I'll be stabbed in the butt by a Russian and left to bleed out. There will be a bandaid. RE: I'm more broken than you - Greg - 04-25-2021 Good luck! To both of you. There will be a bandaid. But I know better, because I've been educated by DM. They're not for facilitating bleedout. They're for lightening the blade without sacrificing strength, and should really be called fullers. Anyway, they'll only help him stab deeper. So I'm not worried. Do they have blood cups too? Oh no, wait now. Russian Shashka (swords) don't have hand guards so maybe not. ![]() RE: I'm more broken than you - Dr. Ivor Yeti - 04-26-2021 Always nice to see a truly Caucasian weapon. RE: I'm more broken than you - Greg - 04-28-2021 Woohoo! Sugar crash. RE: I'm more broken than you - Drunk Monk - 04-28-2021 Oof. My blood sugar dropped yesterday coming home from the grocery. Haven't had a drop like that in a while. I forgot how shaky it can be. Fortunately, I had food - I just needed to get it out of the grocery bag. Diabetes sucks, man. RE: I'm more broken than you - Greg - 04-28-2021 Truth. RE: I'm more broken than you - Drunk Monk - 04-28-2021 One of the other RM vols at the opera had a testing kit that was a plug in for her iPhone. That was cool. She was testing one of those attached meters too. I should test more regularly. Been getting sloppy during the pandemic. RE: I'm more broken than you - Greg - 04-28-2021 Twice a day, every day. I did an extra check today when I felt myself get all wonky. It came at a most unusual time and I wanted to make sure of the cause. I'm not attaching one of those monitors to my body, but I really hope that an upcoming Apple Watch has glucose monitor built in. The Apple Watch glucose monitor has been rumored. |
