RE: I'm more broken than you - King Bob - 09-26-2019

I just took my annual "occult fecal blood test" and it came back positive this time. So now I get to join Greg in the colonoscopy club. I would have thought that they would repeat the test to rule out a false positive first. Oh well.

Crap.  That's a bother.  Hope that's all it is.  I just got my occult result yesterday.  Negative.  So I'm spared that.  Just completed the head CT scan.

Hoping the best for you.

Yikes. I loathe that fecal test but I’m sure I’d hate a colonoscopy more.

Crap? A pun?

I first read that as ‘I’m so spread that.’  Blush

Well, shit.

Just wanted to make that joke and wish you a negative outcome.

RE: I'm more broken than you - King Bob - 09-27-2019

Thanks for your kind words. I asked my doctor if I could retake the fecal test instead but haven't heard back yet.

Colonoscopies aren't that bad. The prep sucks, but the propofol nap is terrific!

RE: I'm more broken than you - cranefly - 09-30-2019

The CT scan of the noggin went well.  My doc left me a message that all was normal with the brain, while noting a thinning of the left parietal bone from a past injury or congenital.  Not certain whether she or the lab made that misinterpretation.  In fact it's the overlying skin that's thin.  That's where I had a plug of tissue cut out due to basal cell carcinoma, and to fill in the 1"-diameter hole the surgeon made pinwheel cuts outward, drew in the surrounding scalp, and stapled it all together.  So I have a depression there.  Anyway, the noggins okay -- organically.

Urine test okay, fecal okay, blood tests okay with one caveat.  And yes, my doc remains focused on my unintentional weight loss.  Looking it up on the web, I see why.  Unintentional weight loss in the elderly (and yes, at 68 I'm 3 years into that category) is associated with "increased morbidity and mortality."  A 5% weight loss in 6 months or less is a trigger for concern.  I managed a 10% weight loss.

So ... the caveat with the blood test.  While my B12 is in the normal range, it's near the low end.  The doc had asked me if I was vegetarian, which I'm not (I'm still dragging down kills).  Still, she wants me to take B12 supplements.  So I did some reading on the web, just to gauge my level of ignorance -- which is considerable.  You can only get B12 through meat, eggs, milk -- essentially animal products.  Vegetarians need to intake B12-enriched "veggies" or take a B12 supplement.  DM no doubt is more knowledgeable on this subject.  Anyway, the elderly, of which I am one (in case you forgot), don't absorb B12 very well and often need a supplement.  While not vegetarian, LCF and I have been reducing our meat intake of late, as it's the healthy thing to do (so we thought).  On top of that, for the past couple of months we've had fresh tomatoes from the garden, meaning lots of bruschetta lunches and vegetarian chili dinners and even less meat than ever.

So, yeah.  A B12 deficiency could explain some stuff.  It can impair/damage the nervous system, cause imbalance, clumsiness, vision problems.  Possibly lead to weight loss.  Though I haven't had tingling in the extremities or a fast pulse (my resting pulse is 59!), which are among the most common symptoms.  Anyway, I'm bringing down more kills now, and about to start B12 pills.

As for the root canal redo, that got finalized on Saturday.  I asked some questions this time, something I'm very bad at.  Why does my gum remain swollen?  Well, because of the large infection in my jaw.  From my understanding, it is now sealed into the bone so it can't go anywhere new, and it will take some time for the bone to repair itself (and the infection to fully die), so the swelling of the gum will take some time to go away.  What I suspect is that I've had that infection, more or less, since the original root canal almost three years ago (!!!).

That infection couldn't have helped my health.

Anyway, that's my state of health in much more than a nutshell.  Sorry for the ramble.

Glad that the prognosis (for amphibians, a “frognosis”) is generally good. FIngers crossed for a simple B-12 solution.

It was not a ramble, it was an info dump that most of us are better for knowing. Thanks!

Stacy takes B12 shots occassionally, mixed in with all sorts of odd nutrients, some Cruz health clinic.

We used to give B12s regularly at RM for road weary roadies and the occasional rock star.  I tried them.  I used to joke that if you find getting stuck in the arse with a needle stimulating, you should take a shot.

Plenty of oral vitamins - most male (elderly) supplements have plenty of B12 and a lot of 'veg' stuff like soy and cereals are B12 fortified.  Should be easy enough to pump up your B12 there cf.  Good luck.

It's all about diet now for us, ain't it?

RE: I'm more broken than you - Greg - 09-30-2019

To be one of the cool kids, I, too went to the doctor today.

Actually, I needed to refill my cholesterol medication and officially join Kaiser NorCal. Today was the big day. It went smooth. I was able to get an appointment in just three days. I had a nice doctor. I found out I can do my blood work there without having to go to Fresno. Great. Great. Great.

I also learned it was the 10th anniversary of my Colonoscopy. Do you know what present you get for the Colonoscopy 10th anniversary? Another Colonoscopy! Woohoo! Good times.

I also talked to my doctor today about B-12, because I was doing B-12 shots for awhile. B-12 doesn't stay in the body. It's water soluble so it passes right out of the body. The iron I'm taking does not. I'm no longer taking iron.

I hate this thread.

Get used to it.  It'll likely get worse.  And then we'll all die.

Just another thing you can thank H.K. for...

I also opted to have two vaccinations and a flu shot. It was my ten year anniversary of my flu shot, as well.

My shoulders are killing me.

RE: I'm more broken than you - King Bob - 10-01-2019

I'm still holding out and not getting flu shots, despite my wife's recommendation. Epidemiologists have no hard evidence of effectiveness (ethical problem with experimentation), and after reading that infection and mortality rates don't really move whether they guess the strain wrong or right, I've opted out.

I'm with ya on this, KB.

Not willing to take chance with people with weakened immune systems. I’ll maintain my Herd immunity and get the shot
