I'm in for next week's backpack trip. OSL gave me the confidence, logging an average of 10 miles a day. I did that without dipping too heavily into my meds, less than my maximum dosage, and didn't even touch my Norco. Sure, it was at sea level without a pack, but I feel I'm good.
We leave this Sunday and return Friday. Most days are 6 to 8 miles. The killer will be Thursday - 10 miles to enter at Yosemite National Park at Donahue Pass (11,056ft). This will make or break me.
Wish me luck. And Greg, I'll be thinking of you in the heart of the Ansel Adams Wilderness, wishing some photo bug had humped his pounds of camera gear along while making do with my iPhone...

What's the betting pool with Stacy & Tara looking like? Anyone have you down as "successfully completing yhe trip"? Are they betting on miles-til-failure or day/hours-til-failure?

There is a contingency plan. I can bail before the halfway mark and work my way back, then meet them at the other end. It's not a great plan, but at least there's a plan B.
And yeah, it'll be about the altitude and the backpack weight. Why does the hardest day have to be near the end? At that point, I'm fully commited. But onlyt have of those 10 miles are up - the rest are down. That's what it's like when you cross mountains, ya know...

Slightly off topic (which we all enjoy) but thinking of rough travel reminded me of it - in 1884 Thomas Stevens rode a high-wheel bicycle across North America. He had to ford several rivers holding his 50lb. bike over his head.

My ebike weighs ~70 lbs. 5 levels of pedal assist and the first one just compensates for the weight.
