Wearing them out is a decent strategy. I often do that - for a while I could sing Stay Awake from Mary Poppins to patients (also And we bud you good night for deadheads).

The thing about talkdowns is that the drug usually wears off. Not so for organic maladies.

Caretaking is hard, especially when it’s personal. Stay strong, brother.

Dealing with my mom who was mostly lucid, but would fixate on things and be difficult to communicate with, I kept thinking how much it was like dealing with a toddler. You know they can't help it and they have an extremely short attention span. Hopefully, you can sometimes compassionately distract them from the hot stove or whatever by pointing out a shiny thing, or a squirrel on TV...

Currently listening to my mother trapped in a loop of "George Jesus help me" or something like that.

RE: My Family - Greg - 11-26-2024

There is nothing better than listening to your dying mother talk about your father's impotence. A real stellar moment for the memory bank.

At least she finally calmed down.

The feelz...

I put up my mom's artificial tree the other day, partly to get in the spirit and partly to see how much of the scads of decorations I'll be able to purge. I found the box with tinsel in it that is the place of hibernation for an antique toy bear. He hangs from a chain and in his glory days, if you wound him, he would do a somersault. It was tradition every year to see if he was able to make a full rotation, but he was retired ages ago. Hanging him from the top of the tree, the two of us had a good cry.

My mom's decorations are squirreled away all over the house. Another tradition was a little snow village diorama she would put out, with a Santa in a sleigh, a little wooden reindeer, a skier figuring, and a tall wooden house my mom made. I found most of the parts in different boxes, but have been unable to locate the house. I found some boxes I hadn't looked in yet - a treasure trove of photos and clippings I had never seen before from all across the decades. There's a phot of me collecting Darth Vader's autograph at Macy's in Valley Fair. I don't have the autograph any more. It would be worth a ton now that he's dead...Article's about my grandfather's accidental death with letters of condolence, and a tally of which ones were replied to. All kinds of school papers. I learned from one clipping that my grandmother had a reunion in Florida with her brother having not seen him in 40 years after he left Germany in 1924 to live in Argentina.

I found a photo of the Christmas village from before I was born, with the same wooden reindeer and house, but I never found the house...just the plans for the house!

So much history...

RE: My Family - Drunk Monk - 12-04-2024

We went through some xmas stuff on t-day. My mom had boxes of it. My daughter absconded with a few chioce lighting strings and a bunny stuffy. We found an old nativity set that had these little sheep I made out of cotton balls and pipe cleaner when I was really young, like before I moved to Cali, 52 years ago...

RE: My Family - King Bob - 12-04-2024

About all I have left from my mom - aside from Xmas stuff that we got years ago - is her china (going to Salvation Army), a little bit of silver (will take to the rare coin shop for the silver value), a few photos that I should give to my brother, and her Bible. I don't really have any use for the Bible but feel bad about tossing it.

I have some photos and one letter that she wrote to me when I lived in Germany. I still miss her.

RE: My Family - Greg - 12-09-2024

My mother's Qi Vampire is coming over tomorrow. They are going to have lunch delivered from Domino's pizza. They will be getting two vegetarian pizzas. They want to order an extra pizza so the Qi Vampire can have some food to take home with him.

The Qi Vampire is not paying for the food.

RE: My Family - Drunk Monk - 12-09-2024

Maybe you should start going over to his house.

RE: My Family - King Bob - 12-10-2024

Maybe you should salt up the extra one before he leaves.

RE: My Family - Drunk Monk - 12-10-2024

Oooooh. KB is thinking like a true D00M bro.

Pepperoni hides the taste of exlax.

Um, so I’m told.

Plus I might have some special shrooms but that crosses the line, right?

Sorry, been doing a lot of that lately.

RE: My Family - Greg - 12-13-2024

It gets worse.

The Qi Vampire decided to go through my mom's files (I don't know why the file cabinet wasn't locked. Everything else in the house is) He found one of my mother's money market accounts. He came up with a plan to divide the money market money amongst his grandkids. Cool, cool.

My sister called him and told him next time he does something like this Adult Protective Services and the Police will be called. Last warning.

RE: My Family - Drunk Monk - 12-13-2024

Don’t give him a warning. That totally crossed the line.

Do it now before it’s too late.

I speak from experience here - went through this with my granddad.

RE: My Family - Greg - 12-13-2024

I was outvoted. My sisters gave him one last warning.

However, if he shows up while I am in residence, things will do differently.
