Down to our last Ninja - Greg_phpbb3_import1 - 08-21-2012

Wow. I didn't realize we were running out but I guess it is true.
New York Daily News Wrote:Ninjas permeate the media of modern culture—Ninja Turtles, Ninja Gaiden, ninjas who answer questions, ninjas who are doctors ... the list goes on. But have you ever met an actual ninja in real life? Probably not and now, it looks like, you never will.

Jinichi Kawakami is the 21st head of the Ban Clan, ninjas with a lineage that date back five centuries. And according to Kawakami, there will never be a 22nd head of the Ban Clan.

The reason? Well, this may come as a shock, so sit down—it's kind of hard to get away with teaching people how to make poisons and assassinate people these days. Kawakami himself elaborates, saying "We can't try out murder or poisons. Even if we can follow the instructions to make a poison, we can't try it out."

It also doesn't help that being a kid trained in the ninja arts doesn't exactly sound like a day at the gymboree. "I was required to endure heat and cold as well as pain and hunger," says Kawakami. "The training was all tough and painful. It wasn't fun but I didn't think much why I was doing it. Training was made to be part of my life."

500 years on and, when this one man passes, ninjas will be no more. Is that wrong, or is it just the natural progression of man's history and traditions being lost to time?

Congratulations tg! - Drunk Monk - 09-10-2012

You've discovered one of the greatest kung fu/ghost story hidden treasure flicks of all time. Kung fu ghost stories are a huge genre because there are a lot of ties between martial arts and mysticism. Chinese culture is extremely superstitious and the role of the exorcists fell upon martial arts masters, particularly Taoist priests. 7BmD was an attempted crossover flick back in the 70s, an unprecedented cooperation between the leading kung fu flick grindhouse, Shaw Brothers, and Hammer, which I'm sure you already know. Not only does it star Cushing, it has David Chiang, one of the lead martial arts stars in the Shaw Bro stable. And it is awesome. This film will melt your brain.

If you like this sort of stuff, kung fu ghost stories comprise a huge genre. The classic started is Mr. Vampire, which spawned countless sequels, but the first one is outrageous fun. There's also the FantASIA Chinese Ghost Story trilogy by Tsui Hark, which is excellent. Sammo Hung did Close Encounters of the Spooky Kind, which is a lot of fun, if just for the title alone. And I reviewed Painted Skin 2 here (viewtopic.php?f=9&t=1425).

Here's another great one - The Gods Must Be Crazy 3. It stars !Nixau! - the bushman from the first two tGMBC flicks and Lam Chingying, who was the original Mr. Vampire. It was retitled Crazy Safari because of rights issues, but it's totally the 3rd installment to that trilogy. It's so awesome that I'm going to spoil it for you and post the vid of the finale fight here. Watch if you dare.

So I'm on a bus in China. The movie on the small screen near the driver is 'Close encounters of the Spooky Kind'. I have to go lie down now.
