RE: The Peripheral - Greg - 11-09-2022

Ep04 A build up episode. More pieces to put in place. I do like how CGM gets to play the different aspects of the peripheral when different people inhabit her. The Bad woman, Cherise, is so bad, dare I say EEEVVIL? i dare. Although the Queen can't understand a word she says.

Is tQ anti-subtitles? Because close captioning is the way...after a certain age.

RE: The Peripheral - cranefly - 11-09-2022

"Now, Scotty, get our subtitle power up to full capacity."
"She cain't take-it C'ptin!  She gonna blow!
"I can't understand a word you're saying."

RE: The Peripheral - Greg - 11-09-2022

We turned them on for Cherise's scene.

Don't they have universal translators?

Babblefish??

RE: The Peripheral - cranefly - 11-09-2022

Even universal translaters need subtitles in my universe.

Three episodes down.

E5 brings back a little of the ol' ultravi. I liked how the assassin was portrayed, especially in how cold blooded he is. The bowling alley scene was a good set up. The call to the daughter was unexpected and extremely effective - one of my fav scenes in the show. Then the bridge scene was good solid action, and the final fight between peripherals reminded me that CGM has kept up with her martial arts training since Hit Girl.

This ep delivered the goods. I'm still enjoying this show a lot. It's my fav weekly right now.

I almost always have the close captioning turned on nowadays. I need that multimodal input, plus I'm just so accustomed to them that it's just reflex.

yeah, okay, that's bullshit. all my years of concert going plus my tinnitus from that ear infection i had back in the 90s had mucked up my hearing. i need the subs to follow along.

RE: The Peripheral - cranefly - 11-11-2022

5 eps in, so I'm caught up.  Agree that the brother/sister relationship remains compelling; and I also thought the assassin was very well done.

My only real criticism is that a number of people (mostly villains) who should have been killed off on the spot are allowed to live.  The last was probably the worst, where the person is told that this is the final warning, and next time there won't be any leniency.
As if one can believe for an instant that the warning will be heeded.

E6: Now CGM is just showing off. She’s got skills. She could really shine with the fight choreographer. She would kill it in a Stahelski flick. It’s a gratuitous opening fight but hey - a fight in a butcher shop is always entertaining. Whenever there’s a meat cleaver, it’s gonna go down.

Dog lovers - close your eyes. Harsh.

The augmentation was also harsh but it allows for more surreal thinning of reality. Holodeck all of London? Conceptually amusing but falls apart with some scrutiny, but it’s still entertaining.

I love the Inspector - what a wicked role. Alexandra Billings is a genuine trans and sells Lowbeer to the hilt. The end of ep cliffhanger with Lowbeer meeting Flynn totally got me, that plus the trio periphs.

It made be go back and look for her Kick Ass fight scenes...

What DM said. The Queen almost quit watching because of the dog. I feel for the deputy. I do love the inspector. She needs her own show.

Damn I hate cliff hangers. Tell a story to the end. Continue.

RE: The Peripheral - Drunk Monk - 11-19-2022

I kinda like cliffhangers. A lot of Classical Chinese epics are written with cliffhangers at the end of each chapter because those tales descend from an oral tradition and storytellers had to make sure their audience came back the next week.

I mean, I like a good binge too, but more for the vacuous stories like comic book stuff, ya know? If the story is good, and this one is, I like to savor the installments.

And yeah, I feel tQ’s pain. I was shocked that they went there. I was put at ease because you could tell the barbed wire was rubber but when they did the close up of the bomb implant, that was disturbing.

RE: The Peripheral - Greg - 11-19-2022

That CU was rough.

RE: The Peripheral - Greg - 11-26-2022

Ep07? A good episode. Lots of fighting. I'm glad they gave out the reason why Flynne is so important. It was odd that the Inspector seemed unsure of herself in the face of Cherise Nuland after showing how sure she was of herself in so many other situations. Many good scenes to enjoy.

RE: The Peripheral - Drunk Monk - 11-28-2022

Ninja fights! Tower of death style.

Yes this show continues to deliver. I liked the pacing here as several distinct storylines were juggled. That language code but was really confusing. I always have subs on and what I was reading was jammed hard by what was being said.

I kinda feel for that assassin dude. He was just trying to keep his daughter out of harms way.

There was some talky bits that got a tad too cyberpunky for me. They were clearly discussing some important stuff but the psychobabble started to get wearisome. I’m sure it’s a great intellectualized metaphor but it felt a smidge too much. Maybe I’m just tired.

I particularly like the path Tommy took. ‘I didn’t see that coming!’
