I'm in a puddle of weirdness where the faint whiff of hope surrounds me. First, I'm dealing with the advancement to the semi-finals of the DUMBO. Why the festival just can't tell me whether I'm in or out on the first day is a puzzlement. My suspicion is they send out a bit of false hope before crushing filmmaker dreams. I don't believer there will be much to change their minds about the entries in the next six days when they announce. Still, whiff of hope.
Yesterday, I received an email from the director at the Marina Del Rey FF, saying they want to talk to me about a screening opportunity. I was confused because Iron Crotch was already rejected by the MDR FF. I said as much in my responding email. This could go a couple of ways. One, they had made a mistake and will be sorry they sent me an email. Or it is the beginning of another money making opportunity for the film festival. They'll ask me for more money for another entry to a sister festival.
The email I received back answered none of those questions. They did acknowledge they had rejected Iron Crotch but they still want to talk to me. They want to talk to me on the phone about in their words "a potential screening opportunity". This could be another money making opportunity for them where I pay them to screen Iron Crotch. Or another film has dropped out of their festival and they are looking for a replacement. Time will tell. I'm waiting on a response on setting up the meeting.
Stupid hope.

I was right. I just got off the phone with the Festival Director. MDR FF does have a sister film festival called Indie Wood. According to the festival director, all I have to do is sign up for this film festival and I will be accepted into said festival. Here is the kicker, the festival screen at TCL Chinese theater in Hollywood, better known as Grauman's Chinese theater. I might be buzzing a little. The festival is in September. They won't make the selection official for a few weeks. Until then I am officially in, I won't be saying anything. Things fall apart. It's scientific.
Merc in Ret is in full effect. I checked my phone, because I've been expecting this call all day, only to find it was in Do Not Disturb mode. You give me a 100 days, I wouldn't know how to set that up on my phone. As soon as I cleared it, I saw I had 3 missed calls from the Festival Director. Just great. After the call, I immediately went to Film Freeway to fill out my application. Yeah. The Site is down. Perfect. As soon as I have finished this post I'll try again.

Since there is potential, I finally have to get the film ready to be shown in theaters. That requires I send the files off and have a Digital Cinema Package made. When you don't use film, this is what projector uses to show the film. So, for the first time in about 10 months I'm looking at Iron Crotch again. I'm finding lots of little format errors. And one big error from when I went in updated the Chinese language titles. For some reason I had a title running the length of the film.
Currently the film is being transferred into ProRes 422HQ which is one of the preferred formats. Lated today I'll upload the many, many gigabyte file to SimpleDCP, the company that will do the encoding. At some point in the future, I will go to Burbank and watch the film at SimpleDCP to see if everything looks right.

The answer to the question "Do you think anyone will notice these little technical errors in the film?" is a resounding yes, idiot. I got a response from the company doing the DCP and in the politest way possible, they gave me a huge list of oopsies and asked me I wanted to fix them. If this is were a copy edit situation, they would have used the entire box of red pencils. Sigh.
I know what I'll be doing next week. Some of the problems are intractable. It would take me a ton of money to fix and I won't. I've tried to correct them and they are beyond my abilities. A bunch are just little things like stray lines or weird subtitle frames. I can fix those. So, I will.
