RE: Sheltering in Place - Drunk Monk - 01-17-2024

Hump day.

I’m still coughing from papaya withdrawal and international travel kefuffles. I have an interview to conduct this afternoon with a YMAA author. And writing. There’s always writing. Got tapped by DoG for something that I’m excited about but they must secure the screener first so I don’t want to jinx it.

Busy day today - 3 telemeets, dmv (for new photo & eye test), washer repairman appt, iaido with our head sensei from nyc visiting.

Still coughing. My left lung is filled with dead cells.

RE: Sheltering in Place - King Bob - 01-18-2024

A bit stiff in the left shoulder when I woke up, but mostly better now. My remote day so I'm going to the used bookstore and maybe Streetlight, and gluing up some collages.

I just read that Stravinsky did a headstand every day for 15 minutes. That's a long time. I'm doing two minutes.

Two minutes is great. I hate headstands.

They say if you do headstand, you must do shoulder stand. They balance each other somehow. If you don't , you'll become an egomaniac or go mad or something. Iyengar practitioners are stalwart on this point. I hate shoulder stands too.

Thanks for the tip. I'll add that. Just tried it and it went pretty well.

Day Job day off, so slept late (granted, I was awake until 4:30am reading, so no actual extra sleep). Breakfast done, now for laundry and heading back to the old neighborhood for a hair cut. Back at the evening job by 5:00

Wut?

I’m just about to dive into an interview with a YMAA author across the pond. Then the rest of the day is work and healing. Still got a nasty cough. My hip is improving. Now I’m a tad sore because we did our annual new years 1000 cuts last night. Gonna take a hot epsom salt bath when the rain starts.

Did the shoulder stand after the headstand. Nice. Felt good afterward, seems to open the shoulders a bit, but I'll need to do it more before I really get it. That kinesthetic understanding takes time. It doubles my inversion time, so that's a plus. Thanks DM.

Did not need a giant.

Listening to the Bunny Wailer album I picked up yesterday.

Wut?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Standing_on_the_shoulders_of_giants

Quote:The phrase "standing on the shoulders of giants" is a metaphor which means "using the understanding gained by major thinkers who have gone before in order to make intellectual progress".[1]

It is a metaphor of dwarfs standing on the shoulders of giants (Latinnani gigantum humeris insidentes) and expresses the meaning of "discovering truth by building on previous discoveries".[2] This concept has been dated to the 12th century and, according to John of Salisbury, is attributed to Bernard of Chartres. But its most familiar and popular expression occurs in a 1675 letter by Isaac Newton: "if I have seen further [than others], it is by standing on the shoulders of giants."[3]

In Greek mythology, the blind giant Orion carried his servant Cedalion on his shoulders to see for him.

RE: Sheltering in Place - Greg - 01-19-2024

Or Oasis.

RE: Sheltering in Place - Greg - 01-20-2024

We are leaving the Lair! Early this morning, The Queen and I are driving to Campbell to have breakfast with my Nephew, his wife and their new baby at Stack's before heading to Saratoga to see the rest of the family. It's a Lynch gathering to celebrate the new baby. I'm leaving early and heading back to the Lair to watch Sportsball.

Stacks! I know that’s an American family joint but it always reminds me of Hooters.

Did I ruin it for ya? Think of me when they pass the syrup.

I’m still hacking and coughing. Just can’t seem to clear my left lung. My body hurts from coughing so much. I get theee attacks of constant coughing that last a minute or two until something comes up. I need rest.

But the head sensei of our iaido dojo is in town, so I’ll train for 3 hours. We’re going to do some kyudo (archery) which I have not done sine I was with sjsu kendo. Then lunch and maybe an interview.

Then a bit of work promoting the Thursday event.

Then rest.

Today was solo at the shop (my Henchman is out sick) steady biz, everyone pleasant. Now at home, making coffee, drying out my gear and getting warm. in a couple hours I’ll head over to H’s for the rest of the weekend. She is in the final push for her debute storytelling event this coming Friday in Berkeley. Looks like it will be sold out (60 people)

Anyone know a good booze caterer?
