Crap with all that's been going down last week, I forgot - Drunk Monk - 11-13-2016

How did it go? I see you're still posting on Instagram so I'm assuming your survived.

RE: I'm more broken than you - King Bob - 11-14-2016

It went pretty well. It was outpatient, so I went home when I woke up, and the ride was tough; I was really sick to my stomach. And the pain med (Hydrocodone) also made me really sick to my stomach and left my mucus membranes pretty much bone dry. And I didn't get any kind high from it. Fortunately I could stop taking that after Tuesday, but it still took a few days to get my digestion back to normal.

They pump air into you to make room to work, so I couldn't take a deep breath for a couple of days, and the added pressure made me have to pee often and forcefully. As it diminished I got pain in my shoulder joint like bursitis, since the air goes up and filters out there (according to my wife's clients who had hysterectomies and had the same problem).

Now doing better and back to work (though wishing I had taken more time off since I'm feeling better and could better utilize the time off) but still hurts a bit when I walk and more when I laugh or cough or sneeze. I look sort of like I got stabbed once under the ribs and shot twice along my right side. And they shaved me there, so its starting to itch.

I can eat whatever I want, and am back on my normal diet, but I suspect that too much dairy might be problematic. Have to see about that. My weight is down a couple of pounds, I presume from not eating much for a couple of days, and having part of me removed.

Good that you are on the mend - Drunk Monk - 11-14-2016

Yeah hydrocodone is a crappy high. More of a low, really.

RE: I'm more broken than you - Dr. Ivor Yeti - 11-15-2016

The weight loss may also be from being shaved. You never were a smooth man. Debonair, yes; smooth, no.

Tonight, a kidney-stone that had been giving me grief for a few weeks finally went nuclear. It was manageable, but stubborn, and with an occasional "Cabernet PIss" to alarm me, so I had a scan today. Doc says "son, that thar stone ain't a-goin' nowheres. You're gonna hafta see one of them thar 'specialists' and get it busted up".

I then went back to work and then to teaching my first round of lessons. One of the kids, a happy little girl who hits like a tank and has all the remorse of an ISIS dating service managed to hit me right in the rock a few times. Internal outrage ensued (the kid took a good lesson and is showing promise). The pain levels jumped and climbed up to 7.

I canceled my other gig in Berkeley and rode myself to the ER on Geary. What asshole thought it was a good idea to put the ER entrance up a fucking hill? Hills with my lungs and my balls trying to strangle me? I hate God and want the world to burn.

An hour later, with my pain hitting 9.5, seriously the worst pain of my furry life and literally writhing on the gurney, the nice man came in with the morphine.

An hour after all the drugs were administered, I was making my woozy way back to my motorcycle to wend my cautious way home.

Happy now. Be happier after they zotz the damn stone.

Yowtch - Drunk Monk - 11-15-2016

When is the zotzing?

RE: I'm more broken than you - Dr. Ivor Yeti - 11-15-2016

Negotiating the zotz currently. They wanted to do a consult on 11/30, but when I explained how I spent last night, they agreed to 11/17.

Enough of this. I'm heading over to your Ireland thread.

King Bob, how's it going?

Dentist again - cranefly - 11-16-2016

Well, the wandering toothache finally settled like the ball on a roulette table and came up back molar bottom right.  So I got a dentist appointment today.  It took her 0.007 second to pinpoint the problem.  "There's a big hole in the back."  Infection in the nerve going all the way to the jawbone, starting to eat away there.  So I just got a root canal.  Feeling fine.  I'm starting antibiotics.  Hopefully she got the infection.  If not, she'll have to pull the tooth, put in a replacement.

Surprisingly fast and painless procedure, at least for me.  I've heard horror stories.  Or are those about the bill?  That's a pain all its own.

Funny how health insurance doesn't actually cover health costs.

BTW, I'll take this problem over the other ailments populating this thread.  You guys are scaring me!  I'm significantly older than the lot of you, and way overdue for some major medical emergency.

Knock on flesh and bone....

RE: I'm more broken than you - Dr. Ivor Yeti - 11-18-2016

Root root canal pain is right up there with all other major pains. Glad they did you right, though, and I hope they caught the infection.

RE: I'm more broken than you - King Bob - 11-22-2016

Cranefly, sorry to hear that. My mother just had to have a tooth out from infection, but she's so old they don't want to replace it.

IY - still can't sleep on that side and using my abs certain ways (like sit-up type moves) is still very painful, and can't lift heavy things. Other than that good; I am back to a normal diet and feeling normal. But I'm confused by your post - I thought the lung thing was on its way out, but sounds like no. Is it slow recovery or is it chronic?

RE: I'm more broken than you - Dr. Ivor Yeti - 11-22-2016

The blood-thinners are permanent, but the lung-thing, at least the effect of the lung-thing, is supposed to correct itself. Right now I am about 90-95% of normal on flat surfaces while being anaerobic. As soon as a hill or stairs are introduced, I'm down to about 70%. This is a huge improvement over the hospitalization version, which 25%? 100 ft on a flat, stop and pant.

When are you going to be back to your usual self? a week, a month?

Root Canal, Part 2 - cranefly - 11-24-2016

Well, it turns out I was greatly naive about this whole root canal thing.  I went in yesterday for a follow-up, which I thought would be the crown.  Nope.  This was the real root canal.  On that first occasion she did drill out the nerve passages down to the infection in the jaw bone, but couldn't proceed until the infection was gone.  So she temp-filled the passages and gave me a prescription for antibiotics.

So this time she x-rayed to confirm the infection looked gone, then drilled out the temp-fill, and brought out a complex set of tiny picks of every size and bend.  The nerve passages are long and can be weirdly curved.  One of mine was.

So I sat in gaping wonderment for an hour and a half as she picked away, cleaning out the nerve passages.  There was a setback when one pick broke off.  She couldn't retrieve the tip.  So she did another x-ray and said it would be fine to leave it in there, because it was all the way at the bottom.

She filled the nerve passages with something permanent and the top of the tooth for a proper bite.  But there was still the cavity in the side of the tooth that had caused all of this.  It went below the gum-line, which required her to cut away part of the gum.  She drilled and drilled, surprised at how big the cavity was, nearly half the tooth.  Then she filled it in.

Sounds like I should have just had her pull it.  Still, keeping the original tooth is a better guarantee of a proper matching bite.

The molar still needs to be capped, but not until next March, to ascertain there's no lingering infection or other problems.  In the meantime, I have to be careful in my eating, because it's fragile.  Wow.  Three months to make a mistake.

As I was paying at the front desk, the dentist called out, "Hey, Cranefly.  You want to see that pick?"  So I ventured into her office, and she had the x-ray up on her screen.  The nerve passages were very clear, one of them a big looping curve; and at the bottom of the curve, offset and oddly angled, was the tip of the pick.  It looked to be in a safe place.  But I did have one question.

"Why did you call me Cranefly?"

She laughed and slapped at my shoulder.  "Oh, everyone knows about that."

Oooooooooouch - Drunk Monk - 11-24-2016

Exactly how much anesthesia are you on?

anesthesia? - cranefly - 11-24-2016

Anesthesia?  Well, she numbed the area with a few shots, last visit and this visit.  I'm surprised at how little it was.  I've heard of people drooling for half the day afterwards because the lips and mouth are numb.  But this was very local numbness around that molar.  Almost no pain, just a bit of lancing pain when she was picking the bottom.

She told me to swish with saltwater if the gum bothered me afterwards -- because she cut part of it away.  But I'm fine.

RE: I'm more broken than you - Dr. Ivor Yeti - 11-24-2016

I'm happy that the pain was minimal and the infection is gone. I hope your 3 months of cautious eating is rewarded by an uneventful coronation (isn't that what they call getting a crown?).

RE: I'm more broken than you - Dr. Ivor Yeti - 12-20-2016

In answer to The G-Man's query on another posting platform, I'm recovering from kidney-stone surgery. They did it yesterday, out-patient, under general. Went in, got most of that bad boy out (10mm! I should make a tie-clip out of it) and installed a stent. They did specifically tell me that this was *not* a replacement for a penis-bone. The stent is 10 inches long (!!!) and will stay in until I pull it out on Xmas Eve. Me. By myself. 10 inch tube outta my dick. Did I mention that there is a piece of thread hanging out of my dick, attached to said tube?

2016 was the worst fucking year ever.
