So you did it sleeping? Damn. I hate those kinds of injuries.

My work got interrupted again dealing with my mom’s medical insurance. So much for my weekend.

Half asleep. I was wide awake when I realized what had happened.

A little late but - Saturday we were productive. We'd been cleaning the garage, so we took a some things to my work to toss in the big dumpster behind the Art building. Then to Salvation Army to dump my mom's china. (Neither my brother or his kids wanted it, and Christina and I hated the pattern, no one will buy it.) Then to the rare coin shop to sell a few odds and ends from my mom's silver that we discovered. We had like 8 iced tea spoons and 8 knives plus a couple of other things, and we got $200. That's for the silver content; he only buys pieces marked "sterling." I already gave the place settings to my brother for his kids. It made me sort of wish I'd kept them; I think there were 8 full place settings, so probably a couple of grand worth.

DM and TG - if your kids don't want your mom's silver, take it to San Jose Coin Shop on Meridian at Willow, next to the donut shop. Then you can buy weapons or musical instruments.

Good to know. Prolly won't remember it tho. My mom has a lot of silver. There's a huge cabinet of china too.

I remember when I dabbled in lost wax casting and had to get some silver. The teacher directed me to a coin store and the proprietor there cut up some silver spoons with tin snips, weighing out what I needed. I was kinda shocked at the time. Silver is a pretty fun metal to work with though, and a simple blowtorch-driven lost wax centrifuge is a pretty simple set up. I thought about pursuing that craft more but never did.

Walked to yoga today. The new school is delightful and we had a guest do one of those bowl bell sound baths. She leads yogic meditations with them and will be doing monthly sessions, but it's not my thing. Been working today mostly.

Took down the xmas lights. Cleaned my yixing tea set for Thursday's Iai session - our annual 1000 cuts ritual, then a potluck afterwards. I'm bringing tea. Prolly mochi too, but one of the other students is actually making some. Got some writing done. About to head out to the dog park. Tonight I'll likely complete the Kenji sword trilogy and maybe watch more Squid Games.

Spent the morning with my bonfire friend. Two less piles of wood. So many more left to do. Tomorrow it's back to cutting mountain.

Met with old friend of H’s for brunch ( duck mac & cheese, pastrami & duck hash with eggs) back to friends place for tea & further catching up. He’s not a coffee guy (from Hong Kong originally). Very nice time. H & I strolled the 1.5 hours back to her place. The stroll did take us past Sightglass Coffee, though, so balance was restored. Beautiful day in the city.

Now back at H’s; she’s catching up on projects before starting back at work tomorrow. I’m being lazy and reading.

Like DM, I also took down the Xmas lights today. Always makes me a wee bit melancholy, but I do like getting everything all packed away.

RE: Nose to the grindstone 2025 - thatguy - 01-05-2025

I also boxed up Xmas. Then I did a bunch of chores - vacuuming, grocery shopping, etc. I started to mow the lawn, but after two passes, the mower died. There's gas in the tank, so now it's a troubleshooting project that I don't have time for...

My mom was collecting a particular style and there are boxes of different settings and serving utensils.

Why do I have to choose?

My mother was pushing for a trip to the ER yesterday. Talked out of it at the last minute. She thought she was dying.

Technically, she's right.

What is her insurance coverage?

On hold...

RE: Nose to the grindstone 2025 - Greg - 01-06-2025

She has Kaiser but I believe there is the tie-in to medicare.

RE: Nose to the grindstone 2025 - Drunk Monk - 01-06-2025

Gotta be medicare or you'd be paying tens of thousands already. An ER visit will set you back a few $K.

Do you or one of your sisters have your power of attorney set up with her medicare? If not, I strongly advise getting that set up so you don't have to deal with what I'm dealing with now.
