Just no more pit bulls for awhile, okay? - The Queen - 08-19-2008
So the boys and I go for our afternoon walk. As always, they start out on the leash, and then when we leave the streets and head into the park, I take them off the leash and let them walk at their own pace. Keeps me from getting split down the middle when they are of different minds as to which direction they want to go. And 999,999 times out of a million, that works just great. Then there are days like today.
Cuchulain has raced ahead down the long path toward the big open area of the park. The pair of black pit bulls who are also off leashes, go racing to meet him. And not to say hi or sniff a butt. Next thing I see is this giant pair of jaws around Cuchulain's back and then Cuchulain getting flipped over.
The three boys with the pit bulls, thank goodness, come racing up and pull their dog off Cuchulain. Cuchulain's chest is bleeding, I take him and Preston home. I'm trying to stay cool and calm, but I'm shaking like a leaf. Greg is taking care of him, says it's just a scratch and he'll be fine.
I think I could use a stiff drink.

My mother called. For some reason, I let slip the fact Preston has a heart murmur ( Another story. I'm at the vet to get something for Preston's itching, when the Doc says" You know he has a heart murmur, right?" I was supposed to guess that?) To find out how to cure it, we get to run some expensive tests, including an MRI. Fun.
I mentioned this yesterday on my weekly call home. My mother called today to see how Preston was doing and to inform me that I didn't have to do the tests on the dog. They weren't going to help the dog, anyway.

so jingles has this affectation where he likes to eat his food over carpet. i have no idea why, but i've watched him take his food out of his bowl, mouthful by mouthful, and go chew it over the nearest carpet. jingles also likes to steal the cat food. we keep the cat food out in the atrium with the door only ajar enough for the cat to slink through. but saturday, i was looking into a project i have to do in the atrium and i left the door open, so jingles took advantage and snatched the cat food. it was wet cat food and it had been out for a day. it had got maggoty. real maggoty.
so you dog onwers can guess the rest. i came back inside to find a carpet smeared with cat food and maggots. gross. real gross.
i wish i could go back to snakes in the house.

My mom's dog, Sam, used to prefer to bring his food into the living room. She discovered he just didn't want to eat alone, so she and my stepfather started hanging out in the kitchen when he had his dinner. Saved a lot of mess.
FWIW, Cuchulain does it too -- takes a mouthful of food out of the bowl, spits it out all over the floor then eats it again. No idea why. Maybe it tastes better?
