RE: Wu Assasins - Drunk Monk - 08-02-2019 Just got the password to some sneak preview eps. Unfortunately, I don't have my laptop and won't be home again until tomorrow night, plus I have a full weekend, so I won't be able to get at this until later. But then... ...then I'll be cool. Cooler than you. At least for a few days. RE: Wu Assasins - Drunk Monk - 08-02-2019 so un-cool i jumped through all the netflix hoops. they've got this new rather cumbersome preview system where you've got to log onto a special internal media account (which i already have from previous work) and then synch it with your personal email account, and then the preview window is supposed to magically appear as a window with all of the other rows. well, you know how many rows there are on the netflix landing page. not there. nope. so very un-cool.
RE: Wu Assasins - Drunk Monk - 08-03-2019 Every cover is a gamble, especially when it's a new show. If it sucks, like Man with the Iron Fists, that issue will flop. Nowadays, with the diminishing state of the newsstands, I can't afford a flop. As cf knows, I took a huge risk with the next issue putting Iko on the cover for this. Not only is he not Kung Fu, this show could suck. I just unlocked the first three preview eps and watched the premiere. It delivers. Feels like a win. It's Iko - all Iko. Iko Iko un-day. He's great at what he does and carries the lead role very well. In the wake of Into the Badlands, Stephen Fung knows how to shoot a good fight for TV. The choreo is the best stuff I've seen for a TV series yet. The mysticism is a bit hokey, but the ultravi is gritty and brutal so the mystic stuff can be overlooked. It's Wu as in five though, not martial, and they actually got the 5 elements right. The extra bonus is that it shows SF well, not like Always be my maybe. This is the chinatown I remember. It's been a long day. A tedious tournament redeemed by some old wulin friends, a hongbao, and meeting The Beast from Kung Fu Hustle, a wonderful concert, and I'm spent. As much as I want to binge the next preview eps, I need to crash. I feel I can rest a little easier though. I made the right call with this. Drops Aug 8. Until then, I claim major coolness. Hope y'all will tune in. Totally DOOM recommended. RE: Wu Assasins - Drunk Monk - 08-04-2019 Ep 2 and we're still solid. Decently developed characters considering the story - I'm finding the triad depiction, especially the snakehead, well fleshed out. The shots of SF are beautiful and given all the crappy (literally) press SF has gotten lately, it's a long overdue love letter. Most of all, the action is on point. Now some of the other characters are showing off their skills, especially the women. Tasty ultravi, some complex single-shot sequences, reminiscent of Parabellum. My bro Lewis Tan is really good in this - he plays a prick and he nails pricks. But really, it hinges heavily on Iko and he just keeps delivering, not just with his action but with his acting. The weak spot so far has been Celia Jade - the mystical sequences have cheesey mediocre effects and she just feels weak - however there's now fights in the mystical zone, which redeems everything. By this ep, the Wu Assassin world is pretty much built and it can launch into the ultravi. Loving the show. One more preview ep. Gonna peep that next. I really really want a Kung Foodie T-shirt.
RE: Wu Assasins - cranefly - 08-04-2019 I'll be aboard when it launches. RE: Wu Assasins - Drunk Monk - 08-04-2019 Yeah, we got a lot riding on this, KFTC copy editor. I have a freelancer interviewing Juju next week, but I'll probably copy edit that one because it'll be a rush to get up. Hoping to get that up quickly but I'm not sure how fast this freelancer works. It'll probably be straight Q&A so it'll be an easy edit. Mostly, I'm curious how it's received. It's only got one non-Asian character so far (unless you count some villains) - Katherine Winnick. And she's quite good in the role, not only as a hot blonde, but she's a genuine TKD master and can move really well. I'm curious if she'll become a love interest because that would be a cliched play. RE: Wu Assasins - cranefly - 08-04-2019 (08-04-2019, 11:28 AM)Drunk Monk Wrote: Mostly, I'm curious how it's received. LCF can probably talk her brother Mitch into trying it. He watched Into the Badlands -- tentatively at first, but eventually it won him over. I think. LCF gets home tomorrow. I'll check with her about his final thoughts on ITB and whether he'd try this. RE: Wu Assasins - Drunk Monk - 08-04-2019 ep 3 loses a little speed but it does deliver the first cat fight, and it's very satisfying. This ep sets up the first big fight - a cliffhanger which makes me understand why they only sent my the first three eps. It also introduces Eugene. Yep, there's a namesake character, but he's a minor character. At least he's not mocked like Eugene characters often are. So to summarize before Netflix drops the whole load next Thursday: Great fights Iko rocks Decent characters although a bit hackneyed (tongs, chefs, drug addicts, typical Chinatown stereotypes) Beautiful SF Great fights One more comment - it's accurate without pandering. Not only do they get the 5 elements right (unlike say Avatar the Last Airbender) there are constant casual nods to Asian culture that are spot on that those who know will catch and those who don't will miss. Sunzi and Guan Gong are referenced in passing - appropriately but without dwelling on it. And Iko's character is half Chinese half Indonesian, where most shows like this would play him off as Chinese. He's actually completely Indonesian and hardly looks Chinese, but the script covers that. I really hope this is well received. Y'all know what I'm binging next weekend. RE: Wu Assasins - Drunk Monk - 08-04-2019 Just saw the Aug/Sep cover of Black Belt. They went with Bruce Lee and Warrior. Another cover killer is when we go with the same cover as another mag. Feeling even more like a win. RE: Wu Assasins - Drunk Monk - 08-08-2019 Got thru ep 6, which is the first ep to slow down the pace. There are swordfights. Still enjoying it. The characters are developing. Some twists, mostly predictable. Fights still awesome although I’m ready for another Iko fight. Won’t get to e7 until Saturday, maybe. Got a lot of music this weekend. RE: Wu Assasins - Dr. Ivor Yeti - 08-09-2019 Netflix just did an e-mail bomb for it. GI’ll put in on my list now that I’m done with The Boyz RE: Wu Assasins - Drunk Monk - 08-10-2019 My plan for this weekend was to go to the Cabrillo Music Festival and finish binging this. But our wifi is down. That cuts our Netflix. I rebooted several times to no avail. FML. I'm at a Java Junction now for the wifi, but to do some sorting for SDCC next year (pro apps due next week). Also to upload some OSL pix. Tomorrow, I'll find another wifi cafe. RE: Wu Assasins - Drunk Monk - 08-11-2019 ep 7 got a bit silly with the earth bending. why would the escape cave be all cobwebby if someone just escaped down it? and why wouldn't you just earth bend an avalanche if you have your adversary in a cave? but the obligatory redneck fight was amusing. still a joy to see iko move. i've managed to piggy back on a neighbor's un-passworded wifi which i can only pick up in one corner of the bungalow. i have a lunch appointment regarding some jah med biz, but then i'll finish wa this afternoon. RE: Wu Assasins - Greg - 08-11-2019 Did you only do one day of Outside Lands? RE: Wu Assasins - Drunk Monk - 08-11-2019 Yea, just Friday. We had tix for Cabrillo for the weekend. I enjoy OSL but it’s such a hassle to get in and out. |
