Tokyo Vice (2022) - Greg - 04-01-2022

Shoot. I was hoping this premiered today but I guess I'm waiting until next week. On the plus side: Ken Watanabe. On the negative: Ansel Elgort.

Is there a reason that Ansel Elgort wasn't persuaded to change his name?

Then again, if you're a superb enough talent....

Does Ansel Elgort have superb talent? Really?

As for tg, I am not good at forum.

Multiverse ftw!

It’s not about being good at the D00M4M. It’s about called out those who are bad at the D00M4M.

RE: Tokyo Vice (2022) - Greg - 04-10-2022

The first episode was good. Ansel Elgort plays a young man, Jake, in the late 1990s who wants to work for the biggest Tokyo newspaper. Jake has been in Japan for a couple of years. He teaches English to the Japanese. He studies for the test to be on the Newspaper staff. Once he gets the job. It's not what he thought it would be. He's put on the police beat and there is a very rigid form of exactly what they can report. Everyone keeps asking him why he wants to be on the paper and the answers so far have been less than satisfactory. His first cases are of one men stabbed and another man who lit himself on fire. He finds a connection between the two.

The show is very good and atmospheric, showcasing the less well known parts of Tokyo. There are a lot of weird scenes of Jake getting confronted for being in areas where only Japanese people should be. The show is directed by Michael Mann, the man who brought us Miami Vice (Title tie-in?) and Heat.

I did spend ten minutes looking for this show on Amazon Prime before I realized my mistake.

S1 Ep02 A stronger episode. Now that we know who all the characters are we can finally do some things. There is a strong showing of what life is like for non-Japanese people in Japan. Jake continues to struggle to be a reporter in the confines of the Japanese system. Lots of scenes about the rules governing society. Every interaction is transactional in the world of crime reporting. Jake continues to dig at a story no ones told about the Yakuza. The show has a lot of style which I guess we can put down to Michael Mann's influence although he did not direct Ep02. I guess they put the whole series up at once because I've still got episodes to watch.

Since the film is set in 1999, we don't get to see the technology everyone uses today. It's odd not to see everyone on their cell phones. Jakes takes notes on a notepad.

Ep03 and Ep04 Bad things happened at the end of 3 so I watched 4 as well. I think the most motivating thing about this show is the fish out of water aspect of it for Jake. He keeps doing these very brazen things with the Yakuza that are only going to get him killed. There is also Samantha, an American and a hostess at a bar. Bad things are going to happen to her as well because she is an outsider, too. The information about everyone's backstories keeps getting doled out in a very compelling way. And everyone has a backstory.

This is a smoking show, as well, were everyone smokes. I always wonder if the actors like that when it happens because rumor has it that every actor smokes. And some of the actors in the show smoke really well.

Even Ansel Elgort as Jake is still fun to watch although I wish he would get a haircut.

RE: Tokyo Vice (2022) - Greg - 05-08-2022

Dropped back in for two more episodes. It is still a great clash of cultures depiction with reporter Jake as our eyes. In Ep05 and Ep06, the lives of Jake, Sato, and Samantha continue to disintegrate as the corrosiveness of the Yakuza culture effects their lives. I still don't know how Jake manages to stay alive as he stumbles into so many situations he is culturally unprepared to understand. I keep thinking Samantha is more Femme Fatale than damsel in distress as she interacts with Sato and Jake. Sato is the least equipped to handle the Yakuza life where he is making a rapid rise.

There is a really gritty Ninja assassin sequence, how you think an actual fight would play out.

The episodes dropped a lot more back story for both characters which makes there lives look even messier.

RE: Tokyo Vice (2022) - Greg - 05-12-2022

Ep07? Maybe. It's kind of Jake free episode as we concentrate on the Yakuza bosses, the romance between Sato and Samantha, and the policemen. Katagiri wants to catch the mole in the police department. Sato finally realizes Samantha just uses him. It's all still a whirl of machinations. Jake does show up towards the end. Again, I wonder how he stays alive as he flirts with Yakuza's mistress.

RE: Tokyo Vice (2022) - Greg - 05-13-2022

Ep08 The finale. The cliff hanger. They better have season two. This is the act in the play where all is lost. Everyone of the pseudo good guy leads is lost. Every one of them has setbacks. All except for the Tonwah who flies away on his private jet for a secret meeting.

I want answers. Towards the end, even tQ started to pay attention despite her dislike for almost all of the characters. There was another good fight scene in a tiny Tokyo apartment when Karma in the form of two Yakuza henchmen pay Jake a visit.

Tokyo Vice returns Feb 8 even if DM doesn't go to the screener.
