Carnival Row - Drunk Monk - 08-06-2019

I mentioned that I was at the activation for this at SDCC (http://www.brotherhoodofdoom.com/doomForum/showthread.php?tid=1543&pid=33801#pid33801)

It's a translucent metaphor, reminiscent of what Alien Nation did back in the late 80s, or even Blomkamp's District 9, although this is a fantasy version as opposed to a sci-fi one.  But it feels so much more relevant now.

And despite the pic below, I'm actually human, not a filthy critch.

RE: Carnival Row - Drunk Monk - 09-02-2019

Watched E1. It's a predictable mash-up - Dickensian Jack-the-ripper-esque meets the faerie world with a tiny dose of Jane Austin, and the immigrant/other metaphor hits you on the head like a serial killer's hammer.  It's odd seeing Orlando as a human, not a faerie or a pirate; he's an inspector and he's kinda meh.  I like Cara - my first exposure to her - she's got a dark feral-ness to her eyes that works for her character.  Those eyebrows. She's the best thing going for the show so far.  I expected it to be a bit more steampunk and it may go there soon.  It was about to write it off, but then it took a Lovecraftian twist, so I'll probably go for another ep.  Boobs & boy butts but after GoT, it's ineffective gratuitousness.  The various fae creatures aren't quite defined yet - there's women with 'hollow bones' and dragonfly wings and there's critches with rams horns (both sexes) coiling about their heads like Princess Leia sidebuns.  And there's some sort of tentacled lovecraft thang but too dark to see really.  Maybe I projected tentacles. I hope there are tentacles.  Tentacles are the next best thing after sword fights.  Bring on the tentacles.

This would work a tad better for me if the British accents weren't so random, as in every actor just doing whatever brit accent they can approximate. It would've been great if all the fae critches had Irish accents or Scottish accents.

I recant.  I know Cara.  See http://www.brotherhoodofdoom.com/doomForum/showthread.php?tid=4366&pid=28169#pid28169

RE: Carnival Row - Drunk Monk - 09-02-2019

e3 is the back story, and there was a decent twist that i should've seen but i'm not paying too much attention.  there are centaurs, werewolves and battle zeppelins.  still not sure about the tentacles tho. hopefully they'll get back to that or i'll be sorely disappointed. the borg queen had a tiny cameo - luv her.  still not fully engaged by this series - it's just something to watch and i'm too lazy to seek anything else. i do like the dragonfly wing effects even tho it echoes the bug aliens in star wars (ep 2 or 3 - i can't remember). and there are male dragonfly winged fae.  those wings light up during orgasms, btw.

RE: Carnival Row - Drunk Monk - 09-06-2019

Penultimate ep. got my wish with Orlando & tentacles but it’s more Shelley than lovecraft. Less boobs later in the series, still a lot of gory cadavers. It gets better tho, more interesting. Still wouldn’t have watched it if it weren’t for that fine day at sdcc.

RE: Carnival Row - Drunk Monk - 09-08-2019

Binged. Not bad. Not great, but engaging enough for me to see through, mostly because of svcc, and the timing of our lack of internet service making Amazon Prime the only streaming service that I can smoothly leech of my neighbotr's wifi.

I did figure out the ultimate villain, the monster's puppeteer, before the reveal (it was process of elimination). The finale provides decent closure to the season's arc and sets up next season with some additional twists, should it get enough of an audience to be renewed.  I'm not really recommending it tho, only to those who experienced the activation.  I don't know if I'll engage season 2 if it happens.

it was fun to be in the Carnival Row brothel even though we didn't know what it was at the time.

Quote:Carnival Row’: Erik Oleson Steps In As Showrunner For Marc Guggenheim, Travis Beacham Exits Amazon Series

Amazon
EXCLUSIVE: There are major behind-the-scenes changes on Amazon’s Carnival Row as the fantasy drama starring Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevingne is heading into its second season.
Erik Oleson (Netflix’s Daredevil) has come on board as executive producer and new showrunner. He will succeed at the helm Season 1 showrunner Marc Guggenheim, who has been busy spearheading and executive producing the upcoming big Arrowverse crossover event on the CW. Guggenheim, who also has feature projects in the works, is stepping back from his day-to-day involvement on Carnival Row but will be consulting on the series going forward.

Leaving Carnival Row is Travis Beacham, on whose 2005 Black List feature script, A Killing on Carnival Row, the series was based. Beacham is reportedly exiting over creative differences in a mutual decision. Amazon declined comment.
Beacham co-created Carnival Row with Rene Echevarria, who was the drama’s original showrunner and remained an executive producer. Beacham and Guggenheim will also retain executive producer credits.
For Oleson, the Carnival Row showrunner stint stems from an overall deal he signed with Amazon Studios in March.
Amazon renewed Carnival Row for a second season in July, ahead of its Aug. 30 Season 1 debut.  Production on the second season has just began in Prague. I hear the plan is for filming to continue during the showrunner changeover. The series may go on a brief hiatus to give Oleson time to examine the existing scripts and outlines and put his own stamp on them. That is not expected to impact the timeline for when Season 2 will be available on Prime Video.
Carnival Row, which Amazon Studios co-produces with Legendary TV, was met with mixed reaction by critics but has been popular with fans and reportedly has done very well for Prime Video. (Like most streamers, Amazon does not share viewership data.)
The eight-part Carnival Row is set in a Victorian fantasy world of mythological immigrant creatures whose exotic homelands were invaded by the empires of man. Bloom plays human detective, Rycroft Philostrate, while Delevingne stars as a refugee faerie named Vignette Stonemoss. In Season 1, they rekindle a dangerous affair despite an increasingly intolerant society and Vignette harbors a secret that endangers Philo’s world during his most important case yet: a string of gruesome murders threatening the uneasy peace of the Row.
In addition to starring, Bloom executive produces the series, with Delevingne also set to join the EP ranks in season 2.
Oleson most recently was executive producer and showrunner on the well-received third and final season of Marvel’s Daredevil on Netflix. At Amazon, he previously was the head writer and executive producer of the second season of the Amazon Prime Original series The Man in the High Castle, which garnered him a USC Scripter Award Nomination in 2017.
He previously served as writer/co-executive producer on Arrow, co-created/executive produced by Guggenheim. Oleson’s TV series credits also include Kings and Jack & Bobby. He is repped by attorney Jamie Mandelbaum.
Will there be more tentacles? That’s all I want to know.

Meh. It’s not worth it. There are prolly only 5–10 mins of good tentacle action total in all of s1. Better to stick with your hentai.

Amazon Prime Video
Carnival Row is coming to an end at Amazon with its upcoming second season.
This comes as the streamer set the premiere date for the second run of the Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevingne period drama series.
The series will return on February 17.
It was renewed for a second season back in 2019, ahead of its launch, and was filmed in 2020.
In a fantasy world where humans and creatures clash, season two of Carnival Row picks up with former inspector Rycroft Philostrate a.k.a. Philo (Bloom) investigating a series of gruesome murders stoking social tension. Vignette Stonemoss (Delevingne) and the Black Raven plot payback for the unjust oppression inflicted by The Burgue’s human leaders, Jonah Breakspear (Arty Froushan) and Sophie Longerbane (Caroline Ford).

Tourmaline (Karla Crome) inherits supernatural powers that threaten her fate and the future of The Row. And, after escaping The Burgue and her vengeful brother Ezra (Andrew Gower), Imogen Spurnrose (Tamzin Merchant) and her partner Agreus Astrayon (David Gyasi) encounter a radical new society which upends their plans. With humans and fae folk divided and freedom on the line, each hero will face impossible dilemmas and soul-defining tests tests in the epic conclusion of Carnival Row.
Carnival Row is a co-production of Amazon Studios and Legendary Television. The series is executive produced by showrunner Erik Oleson, Bloom, Delevingne, Brad Van Arragon, Sarah Byrd, Jim Dunn, Sam Ernst, Wesley Strick, and Travis Beacham.

Honestly the only reason I watched this was because I had a great time in the SDCC installation. I might finish it out however. Depends what else is playing around then...

RE: Carnival Row - Drunk Monk - 02-18-2023

S2-e1&2: And we’re back! Honestly, I’ve forgotten what happened for most of s1. There was one of those recaps at the beginning and I was watching it dumbfounded, barely remembering any of those s1 highlights. Perhaps I should’ve taken better notes here. Doesn’t matter. I get the gist still. And things started coming back as I watched. It took me a while to remember who some of the characters were but some moments jogged my memory.

S2 doesn’t have any toplessness so far but it’s got a lot of entrails. It feels a little grimier than I remember but the world has gone downhill. I admire it’s world building - the human v fae neighborhoods are complex enough and the dickensian steam punk setting works well for me. Now that the row is firmly established, they can carry on with storytelling. Perhaps they’ll burn it all down for this final season. That would be cool in an epically tragic way.

The effects seem a bit better, particularly the pixie wings. I’m enjoying it for what it is. Orlando has a fun fight scene to start - an underground match v 2 goblins (I think - not exactly sure what they were supposed to be) and a trow (troll?) He can’t keep his shirt on but he’s got great pecs so who blames him? Cara still sports those commanding eyebrows and has fallen in with the critch terrorists (spelchuk just tried to swap critch for crotch and crotch terrorists reminds me of another thread here).

I’ll probably see this through now since it’s going to end. Not particularly D00M recommended.

RE: Carnival Row - Greg - 02-19-2023

i watch S1 Ep1 of this because of the release of Season 2. Boy, is it dark and depressing. Will probably watch a couple more.

RE: Carnival Row - Drunk Monk - 02-19-2023

It’s the bastard child of a Tolkien/Dickens/Lovecraft ménage a trois. But at least there’s pixie orgasms…

Honestly I only watch this because it was my first immersive exhibit at sdcc so every ep brings a waft of nostalgia for a wonderful day spent with Tara and some other friends, plus I like the metaphor. I don’t particularly recommend it but I’ll be interested to see how long you hang with it.

RE: Carnival Row - Drunk Monk - 02-25-2023

Watched another ep and a half. I was falling asleep in the second one because this was a sleepless week what with the storm, fence repairs, early telemeets, and the rush article. Still amused but not overwhelmed.

Man, does this show love entrails. A pix (pixie) named Tourmaline gets possessed by a dying witch and starts having visions - these are triggered by groping entrails. I think there’s been entrail close ups in every s2 ep so far. I should make it into a drinking game.

There’s a new twist with Imogen (the pampered rich princess) and Agreus (the rich faun). They had to flee because of their interspecies love (she’s white and he’s black making the metaphor transparent). They’ve been captured by a commie commune, bringing communism into what has been a show about fascism (the humans) oppression of ‘the other’ (fae folk). Carnival Row is the ghetto now concentration camp where the fae folk are incarcerated.

I’m kinda hoping this final season will end with everyone dying, not because I hate it but because it would be a final note to go out on. Death by tentacle strangulation would be good.
