Santa Cruz Band Schedule 2015 - Would it kill you to make a new thread? - El Dingo - 04-13-2015 C'mon - it happens every year and deserves a fresh discussion! http://beachboardwalk.com/concerts/ 2015 Schedule June 19 Eddie Money "Take Me Home Tonight" June 26 The Edgar Winter Band "Free Ride" July 3 The Sun Kings tribute to The Beatles "Help!" July 10 Macy Gray "I Try" July 17 Berlin featuring Terri Nunn "Take My Breath Away" July 24 Soul Asylum "Runaway Train" July 31 Wang Chung "Everybody Have Fun Tonight" Aug 7 Y&T "Summertime Girls" Aug 14 Everclear "Santa Monica" Aug 21 Blue Öyster Cult "(Don’t Fear) The Reaper" Aug 28 Smash Mouth "All Star" Sep 4 Papa Doo Run Run "(Santa Cruz) Beach Party" Blue Oyster Cult is the only one that would make me do the drive. Never seen them. i like long threads. - Drunk Monk - 04-14-2015 If you make it down for BOC, give us a holla. But don't expect much - here's my review from 2013. Drunk Monk Wrote:Friday we checked out the free concert at the boardwalk which was one of my fav high school bands - Blue Oyster Cult. I think there are only two surviving members now, plus a bass player that toured with Joan Jett and Meatloaf. I remember seeing BOC as Soft White Underbelly at the Keystone in Palo Alto (was that with you, Greg?) and dancing to Burning for You at my senior prom with my date, the hottest junior on campus. So many memories with that band. Now BOC sounds tired, a mere echo of their early selves, but it was fun for the family, a short stroll from home to a big party, although S left early because she was getting cold. BOC did their three big hits, of course, Burning, Godzilla (and now T wants to see a Godzilla flick) and a finale of Reaper. They also did Black Blade, their cheesey ode to Moorcock's Elric and Stormbringer, a pulp series that I was very devoted to in High school. I felt Reaper needed more cowbell and deeply regretted not bringing one of my own (as the cowbell player from that classic SNL skit was named Gene after all). I think I had more fun posting lyrics on facebook than actually seeing the band, but what do you expect for a free concert? Plus with the PAC RIM screener, I was deep in this Godzilla groove, which was very nostalgic. If we go, we must bring cowbells. Re: Santa Cruz Band Schedule 2015 - Would it kill you to make a new thread? - El Dingo - 04-14-2015 Let's play it by ear. I had such a great time doing The Residents that I might sacrifice music quality for DOOM connection. One of my favorite BOC trackd is : Anytime your in town, bro! - Drunk Monk - 04-15-2015 We can hit the Brewery again and the boardwalk is just a short walk from there, over the traintrack bridge. Macy Gray 7/10/15 - Drunk Monk - 07-11-2015 Hoped it would be my GD50 methadone. Twas'nt Soft White Underbelly in a few hours TONIGHT! - Drunk Monk - 08-21-2015 Blue Oyster CULT! I'm leaving work at 3:30 today and hoping to make the early show, but we'll see how it goes. Anyone got a spare cowbell? Re: Santa Cruz Band Schedule 2015 - Would it kill you to make a new thread? - Greg_phpbb3_import1 - 08-21-2015 Don't fear the Reaper, baby. MQ6 flashback - Drunk Monk - 08-21-2015 ED - I saw where Cory and Francine from MQ6 will be at the early show. We might try to hook up. That would be really weird. Anyway, text me if you make it. made the later show - Drunk Monk - 08-22-2015 Missed Cory & Francis but that's just as well. It was packed. It's still dharma & bloom, but the rest of the band are session guys who have their own websites/blogs, at least according to bloom. The sound was way too low. They played a lot of stuff I didn't know or didn't remember...only faintly recognizable. When they went into burning for you, I had this big flashback to my sorry, got interrupted - Drunk Monk - 08-22-2015 ...flashback to me high school prom, dancing to this song with my date, the hottest junior in my high school. Alas, high school... But back to BOC, they played a rather subdued set, somewhat disappointing. Godzilla & reaper were big crowd pleasers and for a moment, it looked like the playa only without the bugs. Nice to see the next gen enjoying BOC. Or maybe it was just the magik of the Cruz. smash mouth 8/28/15 - Drunk Monk - 08-28-2015 I thought I only knew one song of theirs - all star. But I also knew walking on the sun (for some reason I thought that was fatboy slim). They did several covers: why can't we be friends? & im a believer which were well received. My whole family came and Tara thought all of the tunes were theirs until we informed her otherwise. A 2 hit wonder but it was lovely on the beach. It would have been perfect if low cloud cover didn't obscure the almost full moon. Re: Santa Cruz Band Schedule 2015 - Would it kill you to make a new thread? - thatguy - 08-29-2015 When KB and I were in Number Nine, Smash Mouth's guitar player, Greg Camp, was in another contemporary First Strike band (I forget which one). And while there was a little competitiveness between all the bands at the time (everyone else sucked), I thought it was nice to see a college/alternative SJ band "make it". They got way over-played, but Astro Lounge actually had some well written/clever songs on it. I liked this one in particular: I think the Why Can't We Be Friends and I'm a Believer were on their first album and possibly an EP, before Shrek and Astrolounge and their huge popularity. Funniest quote: (my friend's daughter had other friends going to the boardwalk to see Smashmouth Daughter: mom, are you going grocery shopping? Mom: no, I wasn't planning on it. D: Well, let me know if you change your mind. I think I'd rather go grocery shopping than see Smashmouth. --tg Re: Santa Cruz Band Schedule 2015 - Would it kill you to make a new thread? - thatguy - 08-30-2015 OK, I'm wrong. "I'm a Believer" was from one of the Shrek soundtracks, but "Why Can't We Be Friends" was from their first album. --tg cool story bro - Drunk Monk - 08-30-2015 We got the Shrek connection. In all honesty, that's how my whole family know the band. We were very tempted to watch Shrek again RE: Santa Cruz Band Schedule 2015 - Would it kill you to make a new thread? - Drunk Monk - 10-12-2021 (08-29-2015, 05:03 PM)thatguy Wrote: When KB and I were in Number Nine, Smash Mouth's guitar player, Greg Camp, was in another contemporary First Strike band (I forget which one). He suffers from cardiomyopathy and Wernicke encephalopathy. He should have hung it up before this because those ailments are too much to be on stage. |
