This ep still feels like Lucas painted himself into a corner and desperately tried to resolve it all. Obviously he failed on that account. After that, the franchise is like 'but wait...there's more!'

Again, the CGI updates annoy me - they're mostly in Jabba's lair, and they are glaringly and superfluous grabs at humor.

How much time transpires between V and VI? Because Luke suddenly has serious Jedi confidence with his escape plan, not to mention the cool black Jedi outfit. It feels like he needed to train more.

Yoda's death is as conveniently timed as Shmi's and Galen's. I guess that's a Star Wars thing like getting your right hand lightsabered off. It bugs me that Yoda dies before just telling Luke about Leia. If he didn't repeat "Luke...Luke..." so much, he would've had enough breath to spit that factoid out.

The Luke/Leia kinship still bugs me. That felt like a last minute add, or a detail that wasn't fully thought out. Leia's story is the most messed up. Sure, she was an inspiring early example of female empowerment, but the fact that she remembers Padme makes no sense at all, and her story arc is just a jumble.

Still luv Admiral Ackbar yelling 'It's a trap!' He's not Captain Obvious. He's Admiral Apparent.

The galaxy celebrations at the death of the Emperor are annoying mostly because we hear Jar Jar shout 'we free!'

I was at odds with the CGI update swapping the prequel Anakin force ghost with the E VI unmasked Darth. Never liked the E VI unmasked Darth. Shoulda been Prowse - he got the most screwed by the franchise, far worse than Gina. But I get it now. The prequel Anakin works better because he was on the verge of Jedi knighthood, not Darth. It's like Kenobi says - that 'certain point of view'.

Still the greatest installment of the franchise. I still say this is what made it all happen, a rare example of when the sequel is superior to the original.

Why doesn’t R2 & Yoda recognize each other? Perhaps they do and just don’t let on. There is one exchange between them where R2’s beep blip beep could be imagined as an acknowledgement. It’s a stretch, but such are fan theories.

Solo works remarkably well to set up Han & Lando’s relationship.

Why does Kenobi forget about Leia? Too much time under the Tatooine sun perhaps. Darth meets her again on Bespin but doesn’t seem to make the connection. Even in a galaxy far far away, women get overlooked, which is ironic since SW has always hard strong female protagonists. Leia does show some force-friendly moments, not just when Luke telepathically links to her.

Still luv the muppet Yoda more than the cgi one. It’s just more expressive.

I got to the ‘that’s no moon’ because I’ve always wanted to see how well it fits if played right after Rogue One. Not very well as it turns out.

Luke thought his dad was a spice miner on Kessel, which is picked up in Solo. The whole Kessel kerfuffle is redeemed there, and spice mining is more of a thing (more of a Dune rip off).

Why doesn’t Darth sense his daughter? By don’t Kenobi & R2 remember each other? Why doesn’t 3PO know Leia when Kenobi asks? Ive heard fan theories but it seems a gaping oversight that could’ve been more overtly remedied.

The cgi update still bugs me. It does make the flow better from the prequels but I love the in camera effects of the original. It made the Galaxy far, far away feel more grounded. I wish they could’ve improved the lightsaber effects because they hadn’t mastered turning them on and especially off, so most of that’s off screen. That sticks out now.

Uncle Owen was a prick. No wonder Luke is so whiny.

The soundtrack is so on point. That really deals the deal.

Alec is amazing as Kenobi, even if he can’t remember R2. It was his role first and despite Ewan playing Kenobi significantly more, he’ll always be in Alec’s shadow.

I’ll finish it tomorrow probably.

Tara gave me a sticker that said this a few years ago. I was like ‘wut?’ But to her Star Wars gen, it’s a thing. It was my first real clue that there was different generations of the fandom to consider beyond my own narrow perspective. Sure, I saw almost every premiere in the theaters soon after they came out when they came out, but successive generations of fans saw it differently. If I’m honest, Tara is a deeper tan than me because she know Clone Wars better and the video games. While we were looking at lightsabers in one of many Galaxy’s Edge stores, there were a few Jedi & Sith I didn’t recognize. Tara knew them all from clone wars (which I forgot) and one from the video game (but she said that was dumb because you build your own lightsabers in that game for that character too). But back to that sticker, everyone in her gen gets it. Many can recite it, letter for letter. I had to search the web for it (feel free to do so, if you don’t know). That sticker is on my surface pro, but it’s partially covered now with successive stickers.

The first hour of III is a tad meandering, but once Vader flips to the dark side, rest of the ep is epic. The lightsabering is fun and the finale Vader v Kenobi is over the top. Fun to see cgi Yoda bust some moves. The Chewie nod is cool. I still get the feels when Order 66 goes down, and I felt a twinge when the soundtrack themes for Vader, Luke & Leia are teased at the end.

All these years I’ve been thinking they wiped the memory of both droids but it was only 3PO. R2, who’s just a plucky droid from the beginning, remembers it all (unlike 3PO who Anakin built). Since 3PO is fluent in whatever R2 speaks, as is everyone it seems, R2 is kind of an asshole for not filling in the gaps for everyone, especially 3PO.

Not enough Natalie in this one. Too much mopey Hayden in the beginning - it’s not like it’s some big reveal that he’s going dark side. Just flip already. Again, this could be edited - maybe a 2 hour flick instead of 2.5.

Kenobi is more bumbling in the prequels but he finishes strong by black knight cutting up Vader with one stroke as he tried to flip above him to higher ground.

Surprised we don't have a thread on this EII already.

This film is too long. It's like a film of filler between punk kid Anakin and Vader. It might've been good if its 2.5 hours were edited down to 1.5 hours like a normal film.

The good - Natalie is radiant. She's so gorgeous in this that it's obvious now that she would go on to a notable career. I like the sonic charges - cool effect. I liked the Uncle Owen & Aunt Beru connection, although it was a bit weird how unremorseful Cliegg Lars is about Shmi's death. Christopher Lee is great in anything he does and he makes a weak role work. Same with Samuel L. Jackson. The Obi-wan Anakin relationship works at the beginning. And Jango Fett sets up Boba Fett (the show) well.

The bad - The Anakin Padme romance in Naboo (aka Olive Garden world) hardly works. Natalie sells it because she can act. Hayden just glowers, which was surely how he was directed to act. I've made my peace with him in the Kenobi series. The Obi-wan Anakin relationship plays out without sufficient jealously on Anakin's part beyond an angry line or two. CGI Yoda sucks. Jar Jar...nuf said.

The weird - when Anakin tells Padme that he thinks tyranny would be acceptable, it hits differently now than it did before 45.

The satisfying - The Bad Batch makes more sense. I had forgotten the details of how Kamino played into it all.

It’s a 3 min collab between Lucasfilm and Studio Ghibli - a hand drawn bit of animation. I was super excited about the announcement but only 3 mins? What can be achieved in that time? Turns out not much.

Dust bunny is a dumb translation. The Japanese is susuwatari, conventionally translated as soot sprite.

It’s more like a proof of concept short. Probably not worth anyone’s time here.

However this does mean that Totoro is now officially part of the far far away galaxy.

Tales of the Jedi

These are 8 animated shorts about 15+ mins each set in the early clone wars period. I got through the first 3.

1 Remember baby Yoda? Get ready for baby Ashoka. Painfully predictable fro the get go. This is skippable.

2 Two Jedi rescue a hostage - senator’s kidnapped son. It’s clear that it’s Dooku and Qui-gon, but QG is name is revealed with such drama at the end, as if it’s to be surprising. Both Jedi have distinctly identifiable schnoozes.

3 Dooku & Windu. This ep has the big edged body could as the masses* They go to collect the body of a fallen Jedi and stumble onto a murder. It’s okay. It’s like their struggling to give Dooku a better background that justifies his turn to the dark side.

* I dozed off whilst writing this for just a moment and have no idea what I meant when I wrote this.
